The slaves on the island were fully aware of this and planned a serious rebellion for this very day when they knew their masters distraction would be indeed great. The Slaves with government house then situated at Richmond Hill were to have secured the swords of the gentlemen, while the rest were to fire into the house from without. Unfortunately, it was scotched, when the plot was uncovered by a negro woman who overheard some of the discussions. It is this abortive attempt at revolt that we commemorate for as Kenneth Stamp so aptly puts it, these indications "of slaves resistance from a chapter in the story of the endless struggle to give dignity to human life... men can be enslaved under certain conditions but their love of freedom is hard to crush." These then are amongst the "richest gifts that slaves have left to posterity.
