this sad old man looking thing is Stratiomys, a soldier fly that i found hiding from the wind on a particularly hellish day. most species in the genus are a lot less hairy and look more like a standard wasp mimic, but for some reason this one looks like this

I am entranced by their shape and stiff segments and seemingly inefficient swimming style. If you could point me just a little bit in the right direction, I would be grateful! It was about 2.5 inches long.
None of the above! It's a soldier fly larva. Likely in the genus Stratiomys :)
