Not Too Enjoyable So Far...
Do you enjoy this book so far, despite a lot of its vulgar language and graphic sexual imagery?
For the moment I personally can’t say that I am enjoying this read so far. I am finding it hard to get past the language being used in the novel, because it seems like every second word has to do with sex. Sometimes, as I am reading, I wonder how the author even thought about mentioning some things, or another, because this kind of mindset is so outside of my own realm of thinking. There are specific details on what exactly the main character desires in terms of sex and it is a little disturbing. Also, in my head, I picture him as a young man in his twenties, but the reality that he is probably older, maybe in his forties or fifties, just adds to the absurdity of the book so far. Nonetheless, Leonard Cohen made the main character in such a way that the reader has no choice but to love him. There is an element to him that screams lovable. The only word that comes to my head right now is that he is quirky, but I feel like as the story progresses, I am going to think of the exact thing that makes him so likable. It could be just that we, as readers, are biased to whoever’s point of view the story is in, so that no matter who it is, even a sex-obsessed man, would be liked. Maybe if I related to this main character more, I would be more into this book, but it is really hard to find things about him that I can associate with.
What I do love, though, about this book is that Leonard Cohen is such a great poet, and it really shows in some of the things he has written. Some of these lines aren’t even very significant, but they are just so beautiful that I just couldn’t help but save them and share for the literature circle. This is an example of one of these poetic, and simply beautiful phrases: “I cannot understand why my arm is not a lilac tree.” This is just one of the random thoughts that pop up inside the narrator’s head, but they just stick to my mind. I’m not exactly sure why, but I love the poetic voice that the author brings to the main character.
