The first segment of today is a continuation of yesterday's "Force of Nature" campaign follow the NOAA and FEMA's week of severe weather preparedness. After reviewing the website on my own time I noticed that I had neglected to mention one of their great ideas about severe storm safety. I will now change that.
In this age we all know the power social media holds, and how most of us can access the internet in the palm of our hands. This ease of access has made us a more open community, and that ability to tweet "Just had a great sandwich LOL" can just as easily be used to tweet "Tornado warning for Windsor! Take Shelter!!!" and now suddenly all your friends know even if they had not been paying attention to the weather. This profound technology could save countless lives, and that's what NOAA is hoping it does.
Ready.gov states that once you have made yourself, your family, and pets safe in a secure location you should (if able) tweet or update your status telling everyone what is happening. Say: "There has been a tornado warning- in basement now." or send a text message to those in your area saying "Get to shelter, tornado touched down". With our phones almost always glued to our sides these messages could potentially come faster than the sirens.
Sadly, most of us do not take advantage of the NOAA or local weather station's emergency weather plan that will send us messages about the current weather threats. This author honestly did not engage in such things until after I started writing these blogs, which was shortly after a tornado touched down within five miles of my home. Now I take weather seriously. I have a kit, and whenever bad weather threatens I make damn sure I'm paying attention.
I wish I could actually sit here and tell you that nothing bad will ever happen to us, because we live in Connecticut, but I can't. Yes, this may seem a little alarmist but the fact of the matter is that it's better to be prepared and have nothing happen, than have the worst happen and not have what you need.
Superior Restoration pledged to be weather ready, have you?
