Hello! What can I do to help my birds ( a tiel and a budgie) during severe weather? When it gets bad, I usually move them to the safest room in our house, but I was moreso wondering how I can help keep them calm, whether in their usual locations or while sheltering. They always act really nervous when we have bad storms. Thank you!
Birds are skittish by nature so it’s not something you can easily alter but you can prep the best you can!
You could play recordings of the storm sounds and desensitize them to the individual elements of the storm and emergency protocols. Play the sounds at a low volume and offer treats for hearing it gradually making the volume louder so they’re able to maintain calmness despite the auditory stimuli.
Have a good emergency protocol in place and practice it. Practice moving in to carriers and loading in to the car for evacuation, practice moving under a table to hide from an earthquake, practice moving in to a pillowcase to protect them from smoke inhalation, etc. this way when an actual event occurs they’ll be familiar with the elements of the protocol and be more likely to cooperate in the moment.
In the actual moment it can be helpful to talk to them calmly and have their cage or carrier covered. If it’s not life threatening and just a heavy rainstorm then you may also just want to play the TV a bit louder to help dull out the sudden sounds.

Sticking with the storm theme - how would Kensei and Byakuya comfort their frightened kiddo when lightening strikes, waking them from their sleep? Side note: hope you’re getting lots of snuggles from your fur baby and husband during the hurricane!
Hey there! The storm is due to hit later today (Wednesday - it’s just after midnight).Oh yeah, I get all the snuggles ;) We have a huge window in the livingroom that is almost floor to ceiling. I sit with Harley on the floor and watch the lightning. He doesn’t freak out about storms, so he just lays there and gets his chest rubbed. If the power goes out, Tiger & I get on the living room floor and play Trivial Pursuit by lantern light. Thanks for the ask! The rain always inspires me for some reason. :) Enjoy!
Kensei
Waking to a frightened kid in the middle of the night, Kensei has to refrain from being a total grump. He’s gotten used to it, but it still jars him to go from deep sleep to his scared kid needing him. He lifts the covers and lets his little one crawl in next to him. He’ll talk quietly, trying not to wake you. He tells the child there’s nothing to be scared of. He will explain the science behind thunder and teach him/her how to count after the lightning to find out how far away it is. All this helps to calm and diffuse the fear. Eventually, the kid goes back to sleep and Kensei isn’t far behind. In the morning, you wake up to find him sound asleep with your kid sleeping, sprawled across his chest. You snap a quick picture with your phone before waking them both up to start the day.
Byakuya
He’ll get out of bed and take the child back to their room because he doesn’t want to wake you, and he believes children belong in their own beds, not their parents’ bed. He tucks him/her back into bed then curls up with them. He explains the science behind the thunder and lightning making it less scary. But, Byakuya is also quite whimsical and he loves stories. So, once his little one understands the reality, he’ll tell them a fairy tale or folklore about thunderstorms. (Admiral Seaweed more than likely helps in the story-telling.) Between his calming influence and soothing voice, the child will go back to sleep. In the morning, you wake up then find him asleep in your son/daughter’s bed with him/her asleep on his shoulder. You wake them both with a kiss on the cheek. It’s time to start another day.
