Why you shouldn’t keep pumpkins in plastic bags. Having pumpkins touching each other or nonporous surfaces for a while leads to trapped moisture and rot. If you’re storing pumpkins for a while, you want air flow and porous surfaces! Set them on something breathable like cardboard, folded paper towels, fabric, etc. I’ve had pumpkins last 6 months sitting in a cardboard box on my office floor.
Even if you store them right, remember to check on them now and then - they can look fine on the top while the bottom is already gross. Rot most often makes its first outward appearance around the blossom scar or around the stem.
