“I like it and I’d like to get it more often than I do. Leave to go planet-side rarely happens, and getting there at night, or in a place where you might actually have a chance to pick up someone are very difficult things. It’d be easier to get it done up here, but that’s not really an option.”

It wasn’t on a table somewhere, with a family hoping for a survivor. No, Emily’s first hit was someone that struck first. Someone cruel. Cracked lips, missing teeth, knife in hand. Emily never looked to see if the woman had a name. Or even if she had a family. She didn’t care.

She was only 17 at the time, a well placed kick knocking the woman enough to make her drop her knife. Emily caught the knife on her path to drive the woman to the wall. Her breath fanned across Emily’s bare skin, the cold of winter making it bloom like smoke. Emily dug her knife forward, over and over, aiming for main organs. She had been leaving her dance practice, bundled up for the cold. Her mittens keeping her safe from finger prints, her hair tightly bound in a hat. She was lucky.
