     “if it had to be anyone, i’m glad it’s you.” he doesn’t meet her eyes as he says it, gaze down at his own hands, at the red bayard that feels so wrong to hold. the tightness in his voice is obvious, and he doesn’t try to hide it. he sat in the cockpit like everyone else. he knows what it is to be denied. “he’d want it to be you.”

     “ --- y’know, where i’m from, that’s called fighting dirty. ” he’s sure the last thing jae needs is a lecture on hand - to - hand, but jason is grateful for these lulls in their training. grateful for the chance to clear his mind before getting caught back up in memories he wished he could forget. his right shoulder aches, mechanical fist clenching for a moment. “ maybe try to keep everything above the belt from now on? ”

   “jae, from one 10 to another --- do you think the paladin suit make my ass look weird?”
