I think it’s fairy normal that you learn lots of languages in high school (at least if you’re on continental Europe?) I think nowadays students start English earlier than I did, depending on the school but it’s a pretty heavy work load all things considered.
Since Italian is an official language in Switzerland it makes sense to teach it! It’s offered as a focus course and lots of students took it back when I was in school. I’d say it’s fairly popular and we have lots of Italian speaking families in Switzerland (not families from Ticino, but from Italy).
