*opens 50-slide Powerpoint, puts on sunglasses* Iām glad you asked. I hope you like long essays.
when I started shipping it if I did: i always knew i was gonna love their dynamic, but the entirety of the no manās land/veld battle sequence cinched it for me. āsheās taking all the fire, letās go!ā,Ā ādiana, shield!ā, that moment when diana specifically calls out for steve (and no one else) in the trenches to follow her, and all those little moments where their eyes meet across the battlefield and careless whisper plays in the background. what can i say, i love a good power couple.
my thoughts: godtier ship consisting of two people who are truly equals. they cannot be more different yet they fight for the same thing and their moral compasses align perfectly. a great subversion of traditional gender dynamics and theyāre comfortable with it and donāt give a damn what anyone else thinks. function great as a team but work just fine individually, too, the antithesis of co-dependence. both strong without undermining the other. love each other with all their hearts but never afraid to call each other out on their bs. the stuff most otps wish they were but could never be.
What makes me happy about them: the fact that yes, they do make each other better, but they didnāt make each other good. steve wasnāt the reason diana became a hero, she was going to be one with or without him. likewise, diana wasnāt the sole reason steve wanted to end the war, he was ready to die over that notebook in the very first scene we saw him, way before he met diana. they were already good people before they met each other. but that doesnāt mean they didnāt impact each other in a positive way. steve helped diana realize that being good is a choice and that goodness is still worth fighting for, while dianaās optimism and passion and wide-eyed innocence reminded steve of why he started fighting in the first place. they werenāt two halves of a whole because they were already pretty fucking kickass individually, but their partnership added something new and valuable to their polarizing perspectives. itās the perfect cynic-idealist duo written well.Ā
What makes me sad about them: the fact that sheāll always outlive him? i try not to think about it.Ā
things done in fanfic that annoy me: treating steve as the typicalĀ ādisposable exā and comparing him unfavorably to superman/batman/whoever dianaās intended true love is. portraying the relationship as unequal (i.e. steve loves diana more than she loves him, etc.) portraying either of them as the possessive, jealous type. one that particularly makes my blood boil: misunderstanding their story asĀ āborn sexy yesterday female character runs off with the first handsome man she seesā.
things I look for in fanfic: fluff, fluff and more fluff. mundane domestic things. cuddling in bed after a long day. taking hot showers together. steve cooking for diana. diana picking up the best parisian cakes and food, watching as steve falls head over heels in love with all of them and laughing when he muses about how bad the food used to be in 1918 in comparison. angst as steve copes with his PTSD and getting used to an era that isnāt his own and diana learns to control her own panic that sheāll lose him again (she wonāt because I said so). hilarity as diana introduces a bewildered steve to the tacky, neon-colored 1980s.Ā
Who Iād be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:Ā iām ride or die wondertrev forever, but i guess if we had to go there i wouldnāt mind them ending up with randos. i say this very reluctantly, however. there isnāt a single established canon character i can see them logically ending up with. previous relationships before they meet each other are fine, though. so long as itās not superman or batman for diana.
My happily ever after for them: they live together. they donāt get married not because they donāt want to, or because they donāt see their relationship lasting, but because they see no point in it.Ā āi donāt need a piece of paper to prove i love you,ā diana said once, and steve couldnāt really argue with that (theyāre basically married in their minds, anyway). they make old people jokes about each other (ānot too shabby for a 135-year-old.āĀ āand how old are you, exactly?ā). they go off doing their own things during the day, diana with league stuff and her dayjob, and steve with his air force/argus missions, and they love coming home to each other at the end of it. they go on missions together and fail miserably at hiding how disgustingly in love they are from their teammates. they still dance in the snow. they go out for ice cream. steve makes breakfast and they get weirdly competitive over the crosswords in the morning newspaper. maybe they have lyta one day and become those embarrassing parents who cheer a little too loudly at recitals, or maybe they adopt a dog. life cannot get any more perfect, and they have literally all the time in the world to enjoy it.Ā
who is the big spoon/little spoon: they take turns, but their preferred setup is diana as the big spoon and steve as the little spoon.Ā
what is their favorite non-sexual activity: sometimes steve turns on some cheesy 80s ballad and sweeps diana into a dance right there in their living room. sometimes thereās no music and he attempts to sing (very badly, very off-key) when diana playfully insists itās not dancing if thereās no music. diana laughs until there are tears in her eyes, and steve thinks itās the most beautiful sound heās ever heard.Ā
send me a (preferably dc or marvel) ship!
