Steve Cohen, chairman and CEO of hedge fund Point72, has expressed growing pessimism about the U.S. economy. Speaking at the FII Priority Summit in Miami Beach, Florida, Cohen criticized President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policies, arguing they could exacerbate inflation and curb consumer spending.

“Tariffs cannot be positive, okay? I mean, it’s a tax,” Cohen stated. He also pointed to the administration’s stricter immigration policies, warning they could constrain labor supply and slow economic expansion.

Impact of DOGE’s Cost-Cutting Measures

Cohen also took aim at budget reductions led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), spearheaded by Elon Musk. The department’s initiative to cut federal spending by $2 trillion, according to Cohen, could further strain economic growth.

“When that money has been coursing through the economy for years and now potentially gets reduced or stopped, it has to be negative,” he said.

Market and Economic Outlook

Cohen predicts that U.S. economic growth could slow from 2.5% to 1.5% in the latter half of 2025. He believes a stock market correction may be imminent due to macroeconomic uncertainty but does not foresee a catastrophic downturn.

“I think we’re seeing a regime shift. It may only last a year or so, but I think the best gains have already been had. A significant correction wouldn’t surprise me,” Cohen remarked.

However, Nancy Lazar, chief economist at Piper Sandler, has a different view. Speaking on CNBC’s The Exchange, Lazar acknowledged economic challenges but insisted the U.S. is not at risk of recession. “We are going through a soft patch, but underlying fundamentals remain strong,” Lazar said. She pointed to resilient consumer spending and corporate investment as key stabilizers.
