Monday, June 18: The Midnight Ghost Train, “Henry”
Buffalo played like a slightly more accessible version of Clutch, with “Henry” rolling and tumbling along with both carelessness and precision. The Midnight Ghost Train got by during their early years in large part due to the ragged charm of Steve Moss’ vocals and their bluesier take on stoner metal, and “Henry” was a perfect example of that approach. The song was a briskly paced rumbler that worked as both a stoner jam as well as a blues metal stomper, as its looseness felt reflective of both styles, and Moss’ craggly croaking stood out on its own even as it recalled a less ornery Neil Fallon. The Midnight Ghost Train would expand their sound on later records, but Buffalo and “Henry” established their template and set them on their way.
