I've revamped their dynamic entirely. Now, they were childhood friends in a small town in Oregon, but then when he was like 10 Stewart moved away to a city called Cascadia in Rhode Island. And so, when Jasper was 16, he decided to leave his abusive family and journey to Cascadia. There, he found Stewart, who was the only person he knew throughout his life that actually showed any love for him.

And then they kissed after some angst.
