In the 1980s, books from Otto Penzler's publishing imprint The Mysterious Press gave us mystery and noir fiction in classy covers and high-quality paper and printing. They were beautiful objects in addition to their qualities as books. I first encountered the James Ellroy books in the Mysterious Press editions (and in the Avon Books paperbacks, which shared covers) with their gorgeous, evocative Stephen Peringer covers. Peringer seems to have done relatively few book covers -- he has three SF/fantasy novel credits on the ISFDB -- but these covers loom large, to use an Ellroy-style alliteration. These days, Peringer seems to be mostly known for his work as a video games artist/animator, for which he has numerous credits.
