Hard Times
To the best of my research knowledge, Stephen Blackpool would have earned 41 pence per hour in today's money.
(Calculated using Edward Baines's survey tables on Weaver's earnings across 151 mills in Derbyshire, Cheshire and Lancashire, 1833, and the National Archive's historical currency converter, which uses 1830 and 2005 financial data.)
The stranger in the land who looks into ten thousand faces for some answering look and never finds it, is in cheering society as compared with him who passes ten averted faces daily, that were once the countenances of friends.
Hard Times, Charles Dickens
From the outside of his home he gloomily passed to the inside, with suspended breath and with a slow footstep. He went up to his door, opened it, and so into the room. Quiet and peace were there. Rachael was there, sitting by the bed. She turned her head, and the light of her face shone in upon the midnight of his mind.

How does the institution of labor compare to the institution of education in Hard Times?

This clip of "Do You Hear the People Sing" from Les Miserables can be representative of what the Hands were trying to do when they wanted to unionize. The Hands do not "want to be slaves again". Instead, they will stand up to authority, in this case Bounderby, in order to gain more rights and not be pushed around.
Book Three
“‘If aw th’ things that tooches us, my dear, was not so muddled, Ishould’n ha’ had’n need to coom heer. If we was not in a muddle among ourseln, I should’n ha’ been, by my own fellow weavers and workin’ brothers, so mistook. If Mr Bounderby had ever know’d me right- if he’d ever know’d me at aw- he would’n ha’ took’n offence wi’ me. He would’n ha’ suspect’n me.” (264).
Stephen’s final speech reflects his relationship with the other Hands and Mr. Bounderby. He talks about how he wouldn’t have had to leave Coketown, come back, and end up falling into the pit if he wasn’t so misunderstood by his peers. Stephen realizes that Bounderby doesn’t know his workers and their situations, but that if he did, there would be less problems. Stephen would never have been suspected for the bank robbery if Bounderby truly knew him and if he truly knew Tom, it would be obvious who the real culprit was. Dickens uses Stephen to demonstrate how rich owners saw their workers as parts of the machine, not human beings.
