It was really supposed to be a relaxing time at the museum for Proxy as he viewed the exhibits, wondering if he could sneak out one of the fluffiest rugs he had laid eyes upon to wrap his daughter in. As he rolled along the aisle and looked at some splatters of paint on a canvas that was claimed to be âartâ, he couldnât help but notice the other man speaking to the curators.
He didnât really think too much about it, until he passed by and heard the voice of the other- then it struck him as to who he was...and he should not even be here, let alone be alive. Proxy turned away quickly, recalling the time a transmission had been picked up by an unknown source and he was forced to attend to it: only to be privy to the death of the very same astronaut, screaming for assistance as his body spontaneously combusted on the doomed craft he had been on. It was truly a harrowing experience even if he had not seen the other face-to-face, because the voice haunted him even to this day. That was the first and only time a NASA transmission had made it to Manticore, and one of the rare things that could truly shake Proxyâs lighthearted demeanor.
At last, the curators left, and the other was left alone. Proxy rolled over to beside the man, trying to get his attention. âHey, youâre an astronaut, right?â he asked, his voice remaining cordial and conversational before his tone dropped to a whisper at the next enquiry, âWerenât you supposed to be dead?â To the other patrons, it would only seem like two fellow artgoers striking up friendly conversation: but for Proxy, he needed answers.Â

certain kinds of weather sheâd rather watch from the other side of a window.
it is the kind of rain that makes everything grey, as if the raindrops washed away not only dirt but all the colours from everything it touches. and itâs consequential that sheâs taking slow, tentative steps down the sidewalk, stood under an umbrella with an armful of colours.
she holds a higher concern for the stack of canvases in her hold. lest on any other day, her navy blue jacket would have sufficed in keeping her comfortably dry. but nahui is less in control today and simultaneously most desperate for it, socks and shoes completely soaked through because sharing a space meant that she has little say in the steps she has to take. steps that sometimes lead her straight into a puddle because her strides arenât long enough to hop any.
what was meant to be a short trip seems to stretch for miles.
footsteps shuffle closer when she feels rainfall on the billowing sleeves of her jacket, bumping shoulders with the other in the process. cautious eyes dart skywards to his face, and then the hand holding the umbrella.
â your armâs not getting tired? â because if she didnât break the silence, who was? ( not even the rain, evidently. ) â the school is two blocks over so it shouldnât be too far away. â
What's the weather like on her home planet! Any species of animals humans would find odd? Do the inhabitants live in some form of a caste system, when it comes to wealth, social status, etc? Or they as diverse as humans, languages, races, etc? Is the planet in this galaxy or another? How long will she live? What's her favorite food from her own culture? đ
What's the weather like on her home planet!
The weather on Balah is usually very warm, and often times wet. Think of it like one big rainforest. For example, their seasons are called: radiant season (for the tons of sunshine), blooming season (for the perfect combo of sun and rain), rainy-muggy season (rainy and warm), and rainy-cool season (lots of rain but lower temperatures... basically their âwinterâ). Thereâs a lot of risk of flooding and engorgement sickness in the last two seasons, obviously, so they have to take measures to reduce these risks.
Any species of animals humans would find odd?
I think part of the oddness of the animals is that some of them are very Earth-like. For example, Balahyan rabbits and Earth rabbits are very similar. Makes you wonder if there were any ties between the two planets way back when... :^)
Other than that, rather than appearance (since humans are sort of desensitized from their own scifi depictions of alien animals), itâd more likely be the science behind some of the animals that humans would find odd. Like âThis animal is too large and bulky to fly so fast, if at all, and yet it does!â kind of weirdness.
Do the inhabitants live in some form of a caste system, when it comes to wealth, social status, etc?
Yes and no. Rather than interaction across the caste systems being strictly forbidden, itâs just not likely that a farmer would, for example, be in the same social circles as a lawmaker. No one would bat an eyelash if, by chance, a farmer and lawmaker started courting each other and fell in love, got married, had a family, etc. Balahyans are very practical and donât see a downside of taking a lover from such a different social circle. On the contrary, they believe it opens people up to different perspectives that may help them become better citizens in the long run.
There are, of course, differing levels of wealth and social status. But itâs not at all like what you would see in somewhere like modern-day America. The difference in wealth is slight, and social status depends on how much output to the community a person produces. So farmers are actually regarded well and are very respected. Or for another example, this is why Lusine and Zhirayr, the philanthropists of the family, are the most highly-regarded royals, Albena and Aram being close seconds. Intellectual output--lawmaking and such--is also respected, BUT, not as highly-regarded, because laws take so long to research the underlying issues and compose in a way that will benefit the most people, that it doesnât give as much output as often. They donât see it as long-term, constant output while the law stays in place.
Or they as diverse as humans, languages, races, etc?
Yes and no. There are different races; specifically, Iâve come up with 4 so far. However, they all speak Balahyan, maybe with slightly differing slang from region to region (ex: the way that âhellaâ was a US West coast-only thing for a long time), or with different dialects (ex: British vs. Irish vs. Scottish accents).
Is the planet in this galaxy or another?
I havenât actually decided yet. I tend to lean toward it being in another galaxy, because it presents more mystery of the unknown, but I also like the idea of Balah being in âEarthâs own backyardâ so to speak, to challenge what we think we âknowâ about a galaxy we havenât fully been able to explore yet. So, I donât really have an answer! Haha. I need to do some research and think about which of the options means more to me.
How long will she live?Â
Balahyansâ regular lifespan, without any enhancements or medical intervention, is 2,000 Earth years. Some Balahyans do opt to get enhancements/medical intervention that can give them another 1,000 years. Touhi can live longer than that, if she manipulates her own body with her telekinesis. Whether she will or not depends on what goes on in her life between now and once she hits about 1,300 years.
What's her favorite food from her own culture?
Kebabs. Specifically the ones that are comprised of rabbit meat morsels and veggies mostly, with like a few sweet fruits in there for an additional flavor. Theyâre served mostly at festivals, so they remind her of fun and happy times. Itâs a comfort food, for her.
