“hey stella?” meredith called over her shoulder in hopes of getting the attention of her employee. it was closing time, meredith going through the day’s transactions and closing down the till. it had been busy, a lot of people enjoying the weather and buying tulips in bulk, brides filing in and filling orders, and prom was happening. it was corsage or bust around here. in bloom was meredith’s baby. no, she hadn’t started it from the ground up and yes, there had been details of success that wouldn’t be shared with her girls that worked there, but meredith was still proud of it. but right now they were missing twenty seven dollars and fifty cents. meredith wasn’t the best at math but she had counted the money four times, every one of those times coming up short. “-hey, did you perhaps give out wrong change today?”

they sat on top of his prized vw van, hollis’s legs dangling off the long side of it with a stolen wooden cutting board sitting in his lap. he had gotten it from the kitchen at work, the size of it prime for a travel rolling tray. his fingers worked, managing in the twilight. it was a high quality scene in front of them, butterbeer the van parked on top of an outlook, all of dayton in it’s glory twinkling beneath. though, he hadn’t been admiring it much while his eyes narrowed on the task at hand. truth was, he’d been hand rolling exclusively the past couple of days. it was the easiest thing that hollis could think of as a distraction and so he’d turn on his shuffle and roll himself different sized j’s and b’s. it got him out of his head. finally, his posture aligned and he sat right up.
