light eyes displayed pure happiness as james reached a hand out to playfully nudge her shoulder at the sound of her laughter, a small grin following suit. but, something seemed off, and james had been in stefani’s company long enough to recognize when there was an issue at hand. the fact that she’d masked this created the impression that she didn’t want to talk about it, and james hated to pester her over it. but now he was worrying, and when he worried, things went wrong.
then brown eyes caught sight of tear-stained cheeks and instantly he could feel his heart squeeze within his chest, a sudden surge of nausea rushing through him in one quick burst. on instinct an arm outstretched towards stefani, a comforting gesture, though he prevented himself from touching her in case he startled her. he could definitely have that effect on people, even those he was closest to.
as she got up to leave, it was only then that he allowed himself to gently grasp her wrist, offering what he hoped was a reassuring squeeze. “ stef? stefani, don’t go. okay? just --- what happened? “ his voice was broken, full of nothing but concern for his best friend. leading her back towards his couch, his fingers had taken hers within them in the process.
