One of my favorite things done on Our Flag Means Death was not making Stede a super pirate/Blackbeard fanboy. Him not knowing who Ed is at first and just asking if he works for Blackbeard (even though he finds out the truth very quickly) was just a really good way to start everything/make them more equals even if Stede is seen as kind of a joke as a pirate/captain at first and has to grow into it.
