BRIEF BACKGROUND.
lanaya was born in the val royeaux alienage a few years after her older sister, el, and minutes before her twin sister, taralin. within a few years the family would welcome their youngest, dafne. their life in the alienage was as you'd expect it to be -- poor, lacking in a lot of areas, squished together with other elves, distrustful of templars and humans and only having to rely on each other. lanaya's father was the hahren of the alienage, while her mother was a kind of craftsperson for a merchant. her family came from halamshiral a few generations ago and he was dalish-born in the free marches.
when lanaya was a preteen, her older sister told her that she had magical abilities but they had to keep it quiet, otherwise the templars would take her to the circle and they'd never see her again. young lanaya kept the secret, but at a great cost. el was vulnerable to demons, spirits and possession due to lack of proper training. el, in the midst of her worry for her abilities, power and her family drew the attention of a wandering spirit who wanted to help. el accepted. lanaya knew this too. she worried, but she promised she'd be quiet. lanaya watched as her sister changed and the spirit within her change as well. what once was bravery and resilience became rage and fear. one day the spirit lashed out out of fear and both it and el died. not long after the entire family relocated to clan lavellan, her fathers clan. this act alone was of great opportunity and privilege that not many people had in the alienage.
