The Range
We as online math tutor keep you updated regarding math problems. In this post we will discuss about Range. We know that data is a part of statistics. The data is collected, organized, presented, analyzed & then interpreted to achieve a pre defined goal. All these steps involved in data collection are studied under statistics. Let us recall here that in statistics, we need some information in the form of numbers or numerical figures. These figures are called observations & the collection of all the observations, related to a particular type of information, together is called data.
In this session we will try to know about statistics range(Read more here). The range in statistics means the difference in the highest & the lowest values of observations in a given set of observations. It is calculated by subtracting the lowest value of observation from the highest value of observation. We can write it as: Range of data = Highest value – lowest value.
For example:- The marks obtained by 10 students in IV a in Mathematics are 24 , 22 , 19 , 25 , 18 , 24 , 23 , 20 , 19 , 25 . Here we find that the highest score is 25 while the lowest score is 18. Thus range statistics will be calculated as:
Range = Highest marks – Lowest marks = 25 - 18 = 7,
This shows that the score of the students has a variation of just 7 marks. So, the data seems to be concentrated. If on the other hand , the scores of the students are : 10 , 19 , 25 , 23, 9 , 18 , 15 , 24 , 20, 12 . Here the highest score is 25, while the lowest score is 9. So the range = 25 – 9 = 16. Thus the data seems to be more scattered with a higher range as compared to the previous example.
