The Moto GP Starting Grid to be altered
In the aftermath of the incidents that overshadowed the Catalan GP 2026, the officials, teams and manufacturers have agreed on a series of measures aimed at improving rider safety during race starts.
One of the key modifications will be introduced allegedly from the German GP onwards, with the distance between grid positions being increased by three metres. The aim is to provide riders with more space during the starting phase and reduce the risk of chain-reaction incidents at the start of races. Another significant change will see the Ride Height Device prohibited at race starts from the British GP onwards.
Further proposals remain under discussion. Among them is the possibility of reducing the number of riders per row from three to two, a move that would dramatically alter the appearance and spacing of the grid. However, no final decision has been made on that proposal.
As Sporting Director Carlos Ezpeleta explained.
"Changing the grid is a very, very significant modification for the championship and, depending on the space available between the starting line and the final corner, it could require substantial changes at some circuits."
