the golden-bellied starfrontlet is a hummingbird species with a very limited range, found only in columbia and a small portion of venezuela. they are named for their bright coloration, notably their golden bellies; males are more brightly colored than females. like other hummingbirds, they use their long bills to probe into flowers in search of nectar.

Photo of the Day – The Rainbow Starfrontlet (Coeligena iris) has a restricted range in middle-upper elevations from southern Ecuador to northern Peru. While it is named after the males’ iridescent and multi-coloured forehead, the colours can vary quite considerably, meaning the extensive chestnut, long bill and large size of the species are more diagnostic.
