A white woman “who had seen Jason and his two friends at an ATM machine called the police and said she felt, quote, ‘Uncomfortable,’” said Jason Goolsby’s attorney Peter Grenier during a news conference in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. “On the evening of Oct. 12 Jason and Michael were brutalized by the Metropolitan Police Department for literally no other reason than the fact that they are Black.” Goolsby, 18, a freshman at the University of the District of Columbia, on Monday tweeted a cell phone video showing him on the ground screaming in pain as a police officer twists his arm behind his back to handcuff him. The video was recorded by high school senior, Michael Brown, also age 18. Protesters marched on Pennsylvania Avenue on Tuesday. #BankingWhileBlack Grenier said both Goolsby and Brown, once part of a group invited by First Lady Michelle Obama to participate in a career in music and film symposium at the White House, are in the practice of “giving freely of their time to help others.” He said the day of the incident the two and another friend had just completed an orientation and volunteer training to help troubled youth in D.C. They then walked to a Citibank at the corner of 6th and Pennsylvania Avenue S.E. for Goolsby to use the ATM machine. Goolsby saw a white family of three — a mother, a father and a baby in a stroller coming to use the ATM and thought they might need help getting the stroller through the door. “So [Goolsby] went over and held the door open for them,” Grenier said. “Seconds later he heard the woman say to her husband that she had forgotten something in her car. The family left and no words were exchanged between Jason and his friends and any members of the family.” Goolsby then headed to catch the bus to visit his brother at Howard University, Grenier said, when he saw a white police SUV “driving at a high speed directly towards him and he jumped up on the curb to avoid being struck by the SUV.” #tobeblackinamerica #blackman #standupforblack
