June 21st is the Feast of St. Aloysius Gonzaga (1568-1591), an Italian aristocrat who became a Jesuit deacon after feeling the religious calling of God at the age of nine. He received his first communion from St. Charles Borromeo, who was a Cardinal at the time. St. Gonzaga is the patron saint of youth and plaque victims. Against the wishes of his family, and at the risk of losing his inheritance, Aloysius entered the Society of Jesus at the age of 18. In 1591, a plague broke out in Rome. Aloysius volunteered to serve in the hospital. It was not long before he came down with the plague himself. After receiving a vision, St. Aloysius told several people he would die on the Feast of Corpus Christi, (Body of Christ) which fell on June 21 that year. In the morning he seemed fine but he grew weaker throughout the day.
