summary: Itâs another night at Konoha hospital when Haruno Sakura is asked to check on the troublesome patient from room 412. Sheâs tired and busy, but she knows sheâs the only one who can check on him.
.
.
.
She was taking care of her daily piles of paperwork when the silence of the room was suddenly disturbed by the rushed sound of steps coming from the hallway. The rhythmicity, the loud thumps, and the clicking of the heels against the concrete floor told Sakura that at least three people were approaching her. She looked at the clock hanging in the wall across the room, which was striking 3:30am, and she figured they werenât bringing any good news.
They never do. Especially when sheâs enjoying some free time before her shift officially starts.
A sigh escaped her lips, and by the time she dropped her pen, the door of her office flew open. As expected, three nurses stood there, their faces showing concern as they all gasped for air. The pinkette straightened up at the sight, as she was already preparing herself for the worst case scenario. A brutal accident, multiple injured, chaos taking over the hospital⊠That orâ
âHaruno-sensei! We have a problem!â The one in the middle spoke up, her glasses sliding down her nose and her caramel hair falling forward. âWe need you right now!"
âOkay, slow down, slow down.â Sakura started, standing up and walking towards them. âWhat happened? Is anyone hurt?â
âN-No, I mean, I donât know. Maybe someone is, but Iââ She continued, her caramel eyes now averting from Sakuraâs green ones.
âStop blabbering, Chika-chan!â The one on the right said, raising her voice to her friend. âYouâre just scaring her!â
âBoth of you are!â The other one finally said, adding her pitched voice to that mess. âYou should justâ"
âGirls!â Sakura finally said, stopping them before her ears exploded. All the three nurses looked at the young medic now, and after taking a deep breath, the pinkette straightened up her face as a clear sign for them to stop that nonsense. âWhat happened?â
The three nurses were looking a bit apprehensive nowâ not scared or desperate, as to be expected in a serious situation, but those were certainly not the expressions Sakura would expect from normal emergencies. There was something more there, she knew. Something different than ordinary situations, but just as bad as a lot of people bleeding on the hospital entrance.
They were afraid. And more than anything, Sakura wanted to know why.
âItâs the prisoner, Haruno-sensei⊠Uchiha Sasuke. Heâs escaped.â
At the sole mention of his name, her emerald eyes widened in surprise before softly relaxing. Of all the reasons why, someone could come after her with that face in the middle of the night, the Uchiha never really crossed her mind. After the end of the war, he has been admitted to the hospitalâ much to Sakuraâs insistenceâ in order to take care of his injuries and run a battery of exams; and if anything, he has been a good patient ever since.
He hasnât burned anything, he has been nice to the doctors, and for the first time in his life, Sasuke has been following orders. Her orders, to be more exact. Since it was her idea and since he used to be her teammate, Sakura took it upon herself to lead the medical team responsible for him. She signed the papers, prescribed the medications, analyzed the exams, examined him, and of course, she was the one people come to whenever thereâs a problem involving the last Uchiha.
Most of the problems, as sheâs learned, are not really problems, but since itâs him, well, it becomes a problem.
People were afraid of him. They were afraid he was going to burn the entire hospital down and that he was, in fact, planning to destroy the village as a part of his secret plan. To almost everyone, Uchiha Sasuke was still the criminal that has tried to kill the future Hokage of Konoha, and having an entire medical team that thought like that was quite troublesome. She was probably the only one who was not afraid of him, and that was probably why she had barely gone home in the past few weeks.
Sakura was exhausted, but that didn't mean she could just rest. Not when those three girls were probably thinking Sasuke was about to set the village on fire just because he wasnât in his room.
A sigh escaped her lips, and after massaging the bridge of her nose, the pinkette decided to speak up. âAre you sure he wasnât just using the bathroom or anything? Last time he was taking a shower and I walked in on him barely naked.â
âWe are sure this time! Heâs not there! Weâve checked.â
âOkay⊠Iâll go look for him then.â
âShould we inform the Hokage that Uchiha Sasuke has escaped.â
âWhat? No! I-I⊠I can handle this.â
âBut can you handle him?â The one on the left said, her judging, blue eyes never leaving the pinkette. More than the other two, this girl held an arrogant aura towards Sakura and her decisions regarding the Uchiha. The young nurse hated him and whoever stood by his side; and that hatred transcended every professional barrier.Â
And that was not something Sakura needed in her team.
For the first time since the girls had arrived, the young doctor stood straight, eyeing her subordinate with a serious face. The atmosphere got heavier, and from the corner of her eyes, Sakura could see the other two girls flinching. âIâm responsible for our patient. Thereâs no reason for any of us to bother the Godaime because of that⊠But of course, if you want to go out there, then make sure youâre not wasting her precious time.â
After those words and the meaning behind them, the girl shrank right there in the middle of the room. The pinkette, then, took a step forward and towards the door, grabbing her lab coat that was hanging on the back of one of the chairs. She put it on, fixing the collar, and finally turning to the now silent girls with a soft smile on her face. âYou girls go get some coffee. Iâll take over now. Thank you for letting me know.â
âThank you, Haruno-sensei!â One of them said, as they bowed down politely before exiting her office.Â
Another defeated sigh escaped her lungs, and after taking in a couple of seconds to decide what to do next, Sakura left the room in order to look for her runaway teammate. Even if the girls told her they had already looked for him around the hospital, the pinkette knew better than to simply accept their words and not to double-check all the possible places where he could be. She knew he was still around the hospitalâ or at least nearbyâ for she could feel his chakra still looming around. It was faint, since the ANBU had placed chakra-restraining seals on his ankles, but it was still that same essence sheâs so used to.
He was still there, she knew. And not only because she could feel his chakra.
She trusted him. As odd as that might sound, Sakura trusted Sasuke just like she trusted him back when they were younger. He might have made a lot of mistakes in the past, but heâs changed a lot after his battle against Naruto. He has opened his eyes to what really matters, and she knows heâs made peace with all his past demons.
Sakura likes to think she still knows him well enough to know when heâs telling the truth. And if he said he was going to stick to her medical recommendations, then she was going to believe him.
As she walked through the hallways of the Konoha Hospital, her emerald eyes were carefully looking for him. She couldnât really ask around for the whereabouts of a patient like Uchiha Sasuke, so she was trying her best not to look suspicious while doing so.Â
Her feet dragged her around all the common areas of the hospital, smiling and waving at everyone who approached her to say hello. Her acting skills were on point, for no one seemed to suspect her real intentions. She checked the physiotherapy rooms, the guest room, the cafeteria and even the waiting room; but there was no sign of his spiked hair. It was already 4am and she was looking for him like a mother who looks for her lost child in the middle of the crowd, though, instead of panicking, Sakura was just growing annoyed at him.
He was going to pay for doing this. He was going to pay for running around the hospital like a child, and she was going to make sure he learned his lesson.
Why couldnât he just stay in his room? It couldnât be worse than Orochimaruâs hideouts, for crying out loud.
The pinkette grunted, closing her right hand in a tight fist. âShannarou, Sasuke-kunâŠ" She muttered. She had no idea of where on earth he could be anymore, for she had tried all the places where his presence wouldnât cause a ruckus. It was like he had disappeared, vanished, like ninjas normally do. Sakura wanted to give up and just get ready for her shift, but she knew she couldnât, no.
She couldnât give up.
Not before scolding him for messing her schedule.
The young medic took a deep breath, then, boosting up her energies so she could continue to look for him. For she had already spent a considerable amount of time walking around the hospital like a fool, Sakura figured there was a chance he had already returned to his room. She made her way up to the 4th floor, as her heeled boots clicked their way across the hallway until she reached his room. Room 412, the last of the hallway and quite near the emergency stairs of the Hospital. It was still empty, as expected, with a soft breeze coming in through the opened window. The curtains were dancing to the chilly, autumn serenade; the moonlight painted the ceramic floor andâ
OhâŠ
And so⊠it clicked.Â
The window. Of course, the girls forgot to mention that.
âTch⊠Shannrou, how could I not think of that?â She cursed herself, shaking her head, as a soft smile graced her tired lips. For such a good ninja, Sasuke had left behind a trail that any genin could follow, and if anything, Sakura believed that was his intention from the start.
He wanted people to know where he was.
He wanted people to know his location within the hospital grounds.
And now that she did, Sakura could only hope for him not to be cold.
A warm feeling took over her chest as she slowly closed the door behind her. The room was once more enveloped by a comfortable penumbra, and as she rested her back against the door, the pinkette felt like a naive teenager about to do something irresponsible again. Even if she was, indeed, going after him because of her job, Sakura couldnât help but feel excited about meeting him in a secretive place at 4am. She could tell the nurses where he was and she could even ask someone to deliver him a note, but where would be the fun in that?
It was silly of her, for sure, and she could just take the stairs as any other, normal human-being of the hospital, but for once, she wanted to do something different.
For once, she wanted to use the window.
Her teeth trapped her lower lip once more before moving away from the door, and on her way towards her newest exit, Sakura decided to take the spare blanket from inside the closet. She stood in front of the window, then, allowing the cool breeze to play with her pink locks, and in a blink of an eye, the young doctor was already making her way to the rooftop.Â
Using the structure of the building to get some impulse, she jumped her way upwards, and before she knew it, her emerald eyes were already looking at him as she landed on the rail a couple of meters away from him. His eyes had seen her, she knew, but her presence didnât affect his calm and serene demeanour. The wind was also playing with his dark locks, and after looking at his clothes, Sakura was happy to have brought the blanket along.
After stepping down from her landing spot, the pinkette started to make her way towards her teammate. A soft smile still decorated her lips, and she took a deep breath before leaning against the rail next to him. âYou knowâŠâ She started, slowly, as the wind brushed against her cheeks. âWhenever you leave your room without telling anyone, all the nurses of my team come to me saying youâre finally ready to destroy the village. Can you just make up your mind and tell them youâre actually trying to behave?â
âOhâŠâ He shook his head, ever so slowly, still not taking his eyes away from the lights of the village beneath them. âAnd do you think they would believe me?â
âProbably not⊠I guess the only solution is for you to stay in your room, or at least, leave a note with your precise coordination.â
âAah⊠Iâll keep that in mind for the next time, then.â
âTch⊠Youâre impossible, shannarou."
Her emerald eyes were now watching him, and she couldnât help but be captured by the soft movement of his dark locks as they brushed against his skin. Lately, he seemed to be calmer than ever before, and even if she knew it wasnât normal for him to be up there, it was good to see the Uchiha dealing with his emotions in a more mature way.
âSoâŠâ She started again, her voice lower now. âWanna tell me why youâre up here at 4:30 am?â
âCouldnât sleep.â
âIs that all?â
âIs it ever all?"
She simply nodded, noticing he didnât want to get into the details of what had woken him up in the middle of the night. Sakura would never want to pressure him, especially since he knew he could come to her whenever he felt like it. It was important to give him time to process his emotions, and she was ready to give him all the time he needed to do so.Â
âHumâŠâ She continued, then, her voice now a bit softer. "You know, people with insomnia donât just go to rooftops. They try reading books first, then they go out for a walk. Have you already finished all the books Iâve brought you?â
âAah.â He nodded. âIâll return them later.â
âOh, donât worry about thatâŠMost importantly, did you like them?â
âThey were fine. I didnât know you were into mystery books.â He sparred her a glance, as to say he was truly interested in her literally tastes.
âDo I really look like a girl who only reads romance books?â
âHn.â He smirked. âDefinitely not.â
âIâll bring you more tomorrow. Any preferences?â
âWhatever you choose is fine, I guess.â
âGoodâŠâ
As her voice seemed to dissolve in the wind, a comfortable silence was set between them. Their eyes were still lingering over the lights below them, and for the first time, Sakura understood why he chose the rooftop, even if so many things happened there a couple of years back.
Even if that was the place that marked the ruin of the team 7, she understood his reasons.
It was calm up there. It felt free, the air felt lighter and the lights illuminating the streets brought them a steady sense of happiness. For someone who was filled with all kinds of problems and responsibilities, just a couple minutes there were already reinvigorating. Seeing the village sleeping so peacefully after months of constant uncertainty brought ease to her heart, and at that moment, she hoped it did the same with his.
She hoped the lights below them were enough to brighten up his darkest nightmares.
The dim lights that reached his face illuminated his mismatched eyes, and she felt her heart skipping a beat. Over the years, she could see, Sasuke has turned into a beautiful man. His face has become more angular, his traces more mature and his eyesâ Itachiâs eyes, as he had said during his interrogationâ now held no sign of hatred towards the village. The pinkette would be lying if she said his appearance had no effect on her, and the fact that she still had feelings for him didnât make things any easier for her.
Sakura still loves him, for sure. And her love for him was making her happy to see him growing.
Perhaps, she should just leave him to his thoughts. Perhaps, she should justâ
âYouâre awfully quiet tonight, Sakura.â
Her eyes widened as her name rolled out of his tongue, and soon, she was brought back to their reality. Perhaps she could stay a little longer. âSorry⊠I spaced out. I donât want to interrupt your time alone.â
âYouâre not interrupting anything.â
âOh, I seeâŠâ She smiled, then, as her teeth bit her lower lip. At that moment, she could feel her cheeks warming up.
âHn, everything is different around here.â
âWell⊠Itâs been a long time since you were home, right? Itâs normal for things to have changed.â
âI guess youâre right⊠Itâs still impressing, though. All these lights, the new buildings, the people⊠Life went on despite of everything that has happened to us.â
âYeah⊠Sometimes I feel like those 3 years werenât just 3 years, you know? Looking back now, it feels a lot longer than that. A lot of things have happened after you two left. We even went to war, Sasuke-kun⊠Did you miss anything in particular? From the village, I mean.â
âAah⊠Believe it or not, but Iâve missed my apartment a lot. I donât think Iâll ever spend another night in a dark cave ever in my life.â
A wave of laughter took over her, and she saw as his eyes were confusedly looking at her. One of his eyebrows was arched, a pout took over his lips and it was only after she went back to normal that the young medic was able to explain the reason behind her reaction. âIâm sorry, but⊠Of all things you couldâve missed, I was not expecting you to talk about your apartment so longingly like that.â
âEh? Why not?â
âI guess itâs just too simple for you, you know? To think Uchiha Sasuke would miss his bed out of so many other things.â
âWhat else could I have missed?â
âWell, I donât know⊠Maybe your favorite food, the hot springs⊠Basically seeing the sun, in your case⊠But your bed? Really?â
âTch⊠Itâs not my fault if you donât sleep anymore because of your job.â
âHey, I do sleep, okay? Maybe not as much as normal people do, but thatâs because my job makes me stay awake at night.â
âYeah, rightâŠâ He scoffed, clearly not buying her excuse. âWhen was the last time you went home to sleep in your bed, by the way?â
â⊠Well⊠I went home yesterday and rested a bit.â
âHow many hours did you sleep, Sakura?â
â⊠Around 2 hours?â
He shook his head defeatedly at her confession, as his eyes glanced at her. Sasuke was silently judging her at that moment, and even if she was trying to find herself a good argument, she knew he wouldnât accept it. Ever since he became her patient, the Uchiha has been monitoring her working schedule like a hawk. He didnât know much about this new Sakura, but if anything, he knew she had turned into a reckless workaholic, who barely went home and who clearly didnât know when to stop.
So much for the greatest medical ninja of their generation.
âThatâs barely a nap.â
âItâs enough.â She said, a soft smile decorating her lips. âBesides, I do get some sleep in my office when Iâm not working.â
âYou mean on that old couch of yours? That doesnât count.â
âOf course it does.â
âTch, youâre still so stubborn.âÂ
âMe? Look whoâs talking! Youâre just as headstrong as Naruto!â
âHn. Itâs different.â
âHow so?â
âIt just is. Iâm not an idiot.â
ââŠâ She shook her head at his statement, smiling softly at such a mature argument. At that moment, her emerald eyes captured a couple of new lights popping up, a new family probably about to start a new day. People were about to get ready for a new day in Konoha, and she used that moment to check her wrist watch. It was 4:55am. She had five more minutes before her shift started, and unfortunately, that meant it was time for them to end their night.
âYeahâŠâ She said, sounding a lot sadder than she had initially planned. âI have to. Want me to walk you back to your room?â
âNo, itâs fine. Iâm not going back just yet.â
âEh? Arenât you sleepy?â
âJust a bit.â He nodded, looking at the horizon one more time. âBut I still want to see one more thing.â
âReally? What is it?â
âHn.â He blinked, taking a little longer to open his eyes. âLetâs see if you were right about the sun.â
One, last warm smile graced her lips, as she took a step away from the rail. Even if she didnât want to goâ even if she wanted to stay with him so they could see the sunriseâ Sakura knew better than to neglect her responsibilities. People were waiting for her. They needed her down there and she couldnât simply ignore everything else for that one moment alone with him.Â
There will be other opportunities, she knew. Once he got out of that hospital, perhaps, she could take a night off and invite him to spend some time with her.Â
Their time would come, she told herself. And with a nod, the pinkette finally made up her mind.
âWell⊠Just go back to your room as soon as the sun rises, okay?â
âAah.â
âAnd take this.â She started, and before he could turn to face her, Sakura was already covering his back with the brown blanket. She saw as his eyes widened, and at that, she simply smiled. âStay warm, okay? Iâll go check on you later for more exams.â
âHn. I will. And thank you.â He said, pulling the blanket closer. Even if he didnât seem to be cold, he appreciated her gesture more than she could ever tell.
Sakura, then, started walking away from him, towards the stairs. Her heels were clicking against the floor, and her hands were now hidden inside the pockets of her white lab coat. Her mind was already set on the many things waiting for her downstairs, and even if she didnât want to go, she couldnât help but feel more motivated.
It is her job, after all.
âSakura.â
âEh?â She stopped on her heels, emerald eyes widening as she turned to face him one more time. âWhat is it, Sasuke-kun?â
âTry getting some rest.â
âMaybe later.â She smirked, biting her lower lip in a childish way.
âWhy not now? Isnât your shift over?â
âOver? Oh, noâŠâ She giggled, turning once more towards her way out. âItâs just about to start.â
âWhat?!â He snapped, surprised, and at that, the pinkette only laughed.
âGood Night, Sasuke-kun!â
Sakura, then, opened the door, and before it closed behind her, she could only hear him muttering the word âirresponsibleâ. She felt her heart beating a little faster after that, and she couldnât wait to hear about his experience after he woke up.
A new day was about to begin. She was tired, sure, and she knew she couldâve spent that time getting some proper rest, but at that moment, Haruno Sakura was happy to be awake. She was smiling brightly, saying hello to all of those she met around the hallways, and as she went to grab the files of the patients, she could only hope he could see a beautiful sunrise.
fin.
a/n:Â After something more serious, I give you fluff XD I really loved writing this one and imagining the whole scenario! Lately, I've been really excited about doctor Sakura fics, so don't be surprised if she shows up in more fics from now on. Also, I'm 100% sure Sasuke would terrorize the nurses XD Enough of me! What did you think of the fic? Please, tell me your opinion! Hope you've enjoyed it!
Summary: Everything changes, but maybe not everything.
âYou look so tired.â she pointed out from beside him as they walked the length of the village. He spared her a glance and hummed something akin to affirmation.
âWe can turn back now.â she told him softly, not liking the idea of him straining himself on her account. She couldnât say how long they had been walking aimlessly, she was still in a sort of daze since his return, but she knew it had to be hours now.
âNo,â he spoke up, his voice firm, but gentle. âNot yet.â
She nodded, her heart warming a little against the cold November night.
âUnless you want to.â he added.
âNo.â she answered, smiling up at him, happy he turned her way a little so she could get a glimpse of his face from beneath his headband and unkempt hair.
She couldnât be sure, it was dark and he was Sasuke, but she thought she detected a faint smile at her answer.
They went on till the reached the edge of the city. Night had fallen and Konoha slowly lit up with thousands of little lights of varying color, glowing vibrantly in the cold air. It was one of Sakuraâs favorite views.
It couldnât compare to the grandeur of the wilderness or the starry skies that stretched on forever, nor the mountains, oceans and forests, but it was home. It was a pocket in the vast world that held those that she cherished and was a beacon for the one she cherished most of all.
The years heâd been away had left her standing here countless times before, lamenting Konoha could never be whole, could never be truly home without him.
She hadnât realized that she had stopped walking nor that Sasuke waited patiently beside her, taking it all in himself.
âThis place has changed so much.â he murmured.
âYeah,â she agreed. Over the last few years the village had been growing and expanding under Kakashiâs reign. âI suppose everything changes eventually.â
He half hums again as they continue to watch the sky darken and the lights multiply and grow brighter.
She starts a little when his half gloved hand brushes gentle against hers, searching, before taking it fully, intertwining their fingers together.
Her heart is so full, she feels as if she could burst.
Title: Twinkle Twinkle // Rating: T // Summary:Â Sasuke and Sakura move to the city. The lights are hard to get used to. // ao3 link
A/N:Â something short pwease enjoy and disclaimer since i always forget: i don't own naruto. also T rating because i feel like a children's broadcast channel when everything is rated G lol nothing wild here
Sakura stood in front of their balcony window and surveyed the view from their new high rise apartment and sighed. Neither of them liked having the blinding city lights as their view, they preferred something less..developed. The sprawling lands and green, green trees of Konoha were greatly missed already.
As teenagers, they had enjoyed a great number of stolen moments under the cover of darkness; they would rendezvous behind their houses to sneak off and spend time together. Their first kiss was on a starry night in Sakuraâs backyard, right before they were interrupted by her sprinklers turning on. Mikoto, ever the proper one, would have had a heart attack if she knew how many times Sasuke ate an unhealthy amount of midnight snacks with Sakura not only after dinner, but after he had already brushed his teeth. Konoha had its charms, thatâs for sure. Â Â
But it couldnât be helped. Both Sasuke and Sakura had to move to the city after landing their respective jobs and while they were glad to be making more than enough money, it came at the price of leaving their cozy hometown.
Sasuke came up behind her and placed a hand on her waist, âitâs unsettling, isnât it? Even though itâs nighttime, everything is so bright.â He looked down at the cars going by, the flashing signs trying to sell him something, the streetlamps revealing pedestrians milling about. Was that sign winking at him? Theyâre going to need to buy blackout curtains.
She nudged him, âthatâs the point of lights, darling. But I donât like it either. Look, you canât even see the stars.â In Konoha, she had seen at least three shooting stars, which was one less than how many Sasuke had seen. It looked like she wouldn't be beating his record anytime soon. What would she use to make her wishes now?
Sasuke pressed closer to her and craned his head towards the sky. When he was done looking he didnât move away, just brought his mouth close to her ear and whispered, âno, you canât see the stars. But you can still see the moon.â The glow of the crescent above him brought great comfort. Even if they didn't live in Konoha anymore, they still slept under the same sky, under the same moon.
She smiled and twisted in his grip to press a kiss to his lips, âyouâre right. Itâs beautiful, isnât it? The lights donât even compare.â The moon had an ethereal beauty that couldn't be beat, not even by the dazzling displays boasted by a city as big as their new home.
Sasuke nodded, stealing another kiss before Sakura could continue speaking, âWeâll get used to it here. The lights arenât so bad, now you canât get mad at me for walking home in the dark because itâs not even dark. The moon is always there too.â
âThe perks of signing myself away to a corporate job are that we can use a company car. Iâll pick you up. Donât walk in the dark.â
âWeâre not in Konoha anymore, though. The hospitalâs on the opposite end of where your work building is. The drive on the way there will be boring and lonely without me.â
Sasuke rolled his eyes, âIâll manage. The moon will be there. These stupid city lights will be there. And youâll be waiting for me at the end of the journey.â Moving to a new city was hard, but being with his wife made it easier. She always had a smile for him; his favorite was the one that radiated a gentle light not unlike the moon.

Light footsteps approached him but Sasuke didn't need to look back to know who it was.
It was their secret ritual after all.
Sakura sat down beside him and silently offered him a small box of macaroons. He gave her a look as if saying 'Are you serious?' and she giggled before taking a big bite. A comfortable silence was shared between the two, both of them admiring the sight before him.
"Your love for sweets is as big as your talent in violin," remarked Sasuke. It was rare for him to break the silence first, but he didn't mind as long as it was with her.
"And your dislike for sweets is as famous as your talent in piano, Sasuke-kun," she retorted in mock irritation.
"I swear, with the money you give for rent and pastries, you're basically giving your entire allowance to our landlady." Sakura laughed at that. "Harsh, but true. Though I still save some money for the occasional shopping spree that Ino drags me to."
He raised an eyebrow and she giggled at that, knowing what he meant. "Okay. Frequent shopping spree. Though in my defense I basically stop her from impulsive buying that she might regret later."
Sakura scooted closer to him, laying her head on his shoulder. Sasuke adjusted himself so that she would be more comfortable. He liked his personal space, she was the touchy-feely type, and they were both in that level of friendship in which they didn't care.
The two of them were the only Japanese students in the apartment at first. Naruto and Sai transferred in their second year after the four of them formed a bond and a name for themselves as a quartet for chamber music.
Being a piano student in a foreign land without knowing anyone was quite difficult for Sasuke. Family vacations to Europe made him familiar with Paris, but it was a whole different experience to actually live and study in the city of lights. He left Japan with strained ties to his father. It was only through the support of his mother and brother that he was able to follow his heart and pursue his love for music. For a while, he did want to follow the footsteps of Itachi and manage their business empire, but he couldn't deny the yearning of his heart any longer. The first few days were rough, but he was able to manage.
That was why he was thankful to Sakura. With their rooms beside each other, she was a constant ray of sunshine that dragged him from the claws of loneliness. They became a pillar of support for one another, a solace, a home â chasing their dreams with the full knowledge that they are not alone.
The years flew by quickly, and with graduation looming in the distance, it was time to take another step forward.
"SoâŠum," Sakura started, lacing her fingers together. "I heard about Maestro Kakashi's offer, Sasuke-kun."
He sighed. "I was about to tell you about it."
"News can travel really fast, you know."
"So it seems."
Sasuke rested his head on top of hers. "I'm going to take it. I'm his first apprentice ever, and it would be stupid to turn down a chance to learn from him."
A soft smile decorated her features. "That's true. You'll still be joining the Cantor competition next year, right?"
"Of course."
In a burst of confidence, Sakura placed her hand on top of his own. "Paris will not be the same without you, you know?"
The gesture didn't feel enough for him. He intertwined their fingers and held it close to his heart. "And Vienna will never be home without you in it."
Sakura giggled. "You'll be fine. We'll both be fine." She lifted her head to look directly into his eyes. "This is just⊠a 'see you soon.' I'll annoy you with video calls and I'm sure Naruto and Sai will do the same."
The pinkette smiled brightly Sasuke felt his heart was about to burst. "We'll see each other in competitions, and maybe one dayâŠ"
"We'll be the golden duo of classical music," he finished for her. Sakura rushed forward and hugged him tightly, in which he responded with as much fervor.
"Is it too early to say that I'll miss you?"
He rested his chin on top of her head. "No. I feel the same way."
Sakura released the hug and wiped some tears on her eyes. "We shouldn't be sad! Come on!" She dragged him up to stand and both looked at the twinkling lights of the metropolis with the Eiffel Tower taking center stage.
Here, on the rooftop of their apartment â dreams solidified â two hearts found peace.
He didn't fight back the gentle smile that broke free. "Oui."
Sasuke thought that it was a beautiful evening indeed. He just wished it wasn't laced with the sadness of goodbye. But he will hold on to Sakura's words and belief â the hope and excitement of seeing again in the near future, playing beautiful music together for the world to see.
SasuSaku Month 2019 - Day 4: City Lights || [Fanfic] Family Ties - Chapter 2
Sorry for the long delay in posting this chapter but health and relatives visits made it a bit difficult (having nephews and nieces around asking you to play with them isnât the best way to get inspired). Also, Sasuke made things a bit difficult XD
Title: Family Ties: Chapter 2
Rating: T/PG-13
Words: 3470
Notes: Well, as I stated in the previous chapter, there are going to be vampires in this story ^^ I donât know if youâve read manga about vampires before but just in case you havenât, Iâm going to tell you a little about them because Japanese vampires are different from Western ones.
Itâs important to know that depending on the manga/anime theyâre represented with some characteristics or others but what I think itâs the main difference is that vampires are more supernatural beings rather than undead creatures. Therefore, we can find vampires who can walk freely during the day, have superpowers, procreate, work⊠however, I think that one of the most important things is that they donât have the pressing need of drinking blood to survive. I donât want to elaborate too much on this topic because then, the notes would be too long and also, I want to uncover things as they happen in the story ^^ But if you want to check some more info, you can go here.
English isnât my first language so if you spot any mistakes, please tell me. I hope that you enjoy it, and thank you for the notes and follows :)

CHAPTER 2
Expectations.
Uchiha Sasuke closed the door of his fatherâs office and walked along the corridor on the ground floor of the duplex house which had been his home for years, heaving a barely audible sigh. More and more expectations kept on mounting on his shoulders every single time he visited him and showed him his results, either academic, sports or social. However, it was never enough. Every single time, his brotherâs name came into the conversation comparing their grades and their merits.
Despite this, he was not angry or unhappy, or hated his brother. Being a child, he had felt neglected in favour of him but Itachi had always tried to be there for him, even though he was busy himself, helping him with his studies and giving him advice. And even though he still had to deal with judgements, his views had changed as he grew. He had become aware that his father did that because Itachi was his successor as the clan head and also, because he wanted Sasuke to keep growing and be better, so nobody could say anything about any of his sons. Especially at that moment, in his situation.
He went up the stairs, heading to his bedroom. After his parentsâ divorce, Itachi had stayed with this father while he, as a minor, had been taken in by his mother when she left the family clan. He now led a ânormalâ life that he did not want, living in a small rented apartment outside the familyâs influence area, surrounded by people he did not have any interest to know and having to do things he was not used to, like doing the shopping or the washing-up.
He entered the room and, after looking through the window for a moment, at the city which was starting to come to life as night approached and buildings, street lamps and neon signs were lit, he took off his dark green uniform jacket, the striped tie around his neck and unbuttoned the top of his shirt, sitting on the bed, feeling slightly tired. He only had to wait a year and a half more to abandon all that, to be back to his origins and carve his own future, with his own kind. And he had to use that time wisely to harden himself so when he came back, people could see this strength and success over his mistakes.
He leant back, letting himself fall on the mattress and closed his eyes. His mistakes, his weaknesses⊠They were so many that sometimes, he doubted the clan could overlook them one day. Some were small, things that a child did carelessly and were frowned upon but others⊠He clenched his jaw. OthersâŠ
He buried his face in his pillow but nothing, not even his own scent, came from it. He opened his eyes and propped himself on one elbow, glaring at the fabric and pressing his lips together. The maid had changed the sheets again as if they were dirty after just one night. Maybe they feared that he brought any human odour with him. He half-closed his black eyes. It was true that the place where he lived on weekdays was full of smells he had never perceived before, like food being cooked, cars passing by, perfumes mixed in the air from men and women who passed along the corridor on the street or the sheets of his own bed which smelled of the floral fragrance of the fabric softener that his mother used when doing the laundry. At the beginning, it had annoyed him, especially for his sensitivity for smells, but after a while, he had got used to it. His thoughts went to her and the last time he had seen her, the previous morning during breakfast. She had been paler than usual, and it was as if she had lost her energy. She had said that she was tired, as Christmas was approaching and she had become busier with work, but he did not know whether to believe her or not. A part of him wanted to call her to see how she was, but another one berated him for having such feelings. That was exactly what his father and everyone around him wanted him to fight.
Breathing deeply, he stood up and finished changing his clothes. Then, he took out some books from the bookcase next to his desk and sat down, ready to study some more before dinner.
Minutes later, he stood up to take one more, a novel, for his Classic Literature homework but another one attracted his attention, and he picked it up. It was a copy of âBeauty and Sadnessâ by Kawabata Yasunori which probably belonged to Itachi, as he did not usually read those types of books. He swallowed. And it was the same book the girl on the train was reading the day before. He had seen it in one of the glimpses he had caught of her.
In the beginning, he had not been more interested in her than in other humans who surrounded him on his way to school in that uncomfortable train carriage. She was one of the hundreds of students he crossed paths with during his day. And by the looks she sneaked at him, another one infatuated by his appearance. He had felt so annoyed that the following day, as he saw her enter the car, he had ignored her during the whole journey.
However, as he had sensed her attention gradually shift from him to the books that she brought to read during the ride, he had started to get curious about her, not so much as to steal glances at her like an idiot in love, but enough to wonder about her taste in literature or find out her school. It was not a bad one, but not the best for a bright mind as he supposed by the curiosity he had seen in her green eyes and her seriousness while reading when she carried advanced textbooks with her instead of novels.
And then, it was that aroma that she sometimes gave out. It was subtle and slightly sweet, like a summer breeze bringing the smell of ripe fruit. Now and then, it was mixed with recently applied cologne and it became a walk through a garden in spring. Even though he had already known that all humans had their own fragrance, hers had always been comforting, inviting but not tempting.
Until a few mornings ago, when she had given her seat to an old woman and she had taken a grab handle, her back to him. Maybe it was because she had been nearer him or because there had been any kind of disturbance in her feelings, or just because he was more sensitive that day, but her scent had surrounded him, intense and enthralling. His heart had thundered in his chest and goose pimples had formed on his skin, his pupils prickling slightly as his hunger-
âSasuke?â
He jumped and turned suddenly, seeing his brother just behind him, his hand barely touching his shoulder. He had not heard him enter.
âI knocked but you didnât answerâŠâ
He breathed deeply, noticing that his fingers hurt, and he realised that his hold on the book had tightened until his knuckles had become white. Strange energy, like a low electrical current, fluttered in his veins, making him oddly upset.
âSorryâ he replied, clenching his jaw and trying to regain his composure. âDid you want something?â
Itachi furrowed his brow slightly. It was not like Sasuke to show his feelings openly, and to his eyes, it was obvious that something had been bothering him. When he had entered his bedroom and seen him stood there, immobile, his breath slightly agitated and his mind really far away from there. However, he was showing him a composed expression now, regarding him calmly, as always. He opened his mouth go ask but his little brother interrupted him.
âI found this hereâ he said, showing him the book.
âOh, thatâs mine, thank youâ he replied, taking it. âShisui lent it to me, I probably left it somewhere and one of the maids thought it was yours.â
Sasuke nodded and then, put his hands in the pockets of his jeans.
âAnd? What did you want?â he repeated.
âOh, they called us for dinner and I thought we could go downstairs togetherâ the younger man spared a glance at his homework and then, took a step towards Itachi. âBut, are you sure youâre alright? You look a bit paleâŠâ
âYes,â he straightened himself and looked at his brother. âI just need to go out tonight.â
.
Sakura started to go down the stairs from the school library in the building next to the sports facilities with a loud sigh, as the librarian closed the door behind her. She had lost track of the time while studying for her exams and now it was almost dark. A chill ran down her spine as a cold gust of wind passed her and she shrugged under her thick uniform coat.
She was crossing the terrace in front of the main building, which had a fountain in the centre and led into a promenade lined by rows of leafless trees, when she had heard her name. Turning, she saw Naruto running towards her, waving. There were few times now when they could walk back home together and at that moment she was grateful for his company to avoid thinking about everything which was happening in her life, at such frantic speed that she barely felt strong enough to deal with all.
He reached her and smiled widely, his cheeks red for the effort and the cold, and he bent over a bit, putting his hands on his knees to recover his breath. A moment later, he started coughing and she sighed.
âWhat am I going to do with youâŠâ she said pressing a hand on his back and rubbing vigorously to get through the different layers of cloth. âIf you get ill, your mumâs going to be mad at you.â
âI justâŠâ he replied, his smile still intact, as he lifted his head to her. â⊠saw you and I had to catch youâ he straightened and inhaled deeply again. âI wanted to ask you about your dad and his girlfriend.â
If Ino was her best friend, Naruto was like a brother to her. They had met as babies when his parents had moved to their neighbourhood, three houses down the street from hers. They had been together in each of their school stages, she helping him to study when they had important exams and Kushina was exasperated because her son preferred to disappear to play football with other boys, during the summer holidays when they went to each otherâs houses and played in their paddling pools until they did not fit in them anymore, and even when Naruto confessed to her when he was fourteen and she rejected him. They had overcome bad moments, fights and bumps in the road, and after sixteen years, they were still as close. He was the only one who knew about his fatherâs relationship and the change that was about to happen in her life, and even though he was not trustworthy in some kinds of secrets, she knew that he would take to his grave those things that she had talked to him about in the privacy of their bedrooms and that nobody else knew.
âNothing happened.â
Naruto looked at her curiously and scratched his head as they started walking again.
âBut you said he was going to drop the bomb last Sunday, right?â
âHe said it wasnât the right moment, so he decided to waitâ Sakura bit her lower lip. âHowever, thereâs something I donât understand⊠When I saw him the following morning, he looked worried, as if something⊠unexpected⊠had happened. He tried to play it off but I think he lied to meâŠâ
âA fight?â
She shrugged trying to appear nonchalant, but he could clearly see that it was quite the opposite, so he decided to change the topic.
âHey, do you want to have dinner at home? You said your dad was working overtime and itâs depressing to eat alone. Besides, today mumâs making stew. Grampsâs come for a few days and heâs brought some delicious mushrooms from the village.â
She smiled at him, thankful.
âAlright. But first, Iâll go home to change clothes.â
âIâll go with you, Itâs just a couple of houses awayâŠâ
.
Jiraiya was a friendly happy old man who only had a fault, he was a real pervert. Sakura had discovered it when she had started showing curves, but by then, she already knew how to deal with that side of Narutoâs grandfather.
She was overjoyed inwardly when, upon entering his best friendâs house dining room and greet the family, the wide grin on the old manâs face turned into a disappointed pout when he saw that she was wearing straight jeans and a loose thick cardigan which reached past her hips over her black jumper. Also, she realised he did not drop anything under the table during the dinner, as it had happened at other times, and she made a mental note to warn Hinata, Narutoâs girlfriend, about that when she visited the house while his grandfather was there, or she would have a hard time.
And it was really lucky that neither Minato nor Naruto had inherited that trait.
Her smartphone rang while she was enjoying some tea that Kushina had served after dinner and, when she picked it up, she saw it was her father, to whom she had left a message saying where she would be.
âNaruto, take Sakura homeâ his mother asked him while she bid farewell.
He made a face
âBut, thereâre only two houses between ours and she can manage⊠Iâd prefer to stay hereâ he complained while moving forward under the kotatsu covers to make his point. âMoreover, the baseball matchâs going to start.â
Kushina put her hands on her hips as Sakura chuckled, knowing what was coming. The woman started ranting about her sonâs lack of manners and how Hinata could get tired of him one day if he treated her like that. In the end, Naruto stood up with a sour face.
âYou shouldnât haveâŠâ Sakura whispered to Kushina when he left to retrieve his coat. âNow I feel pity for him.â
âHe has to learn that he canât treat girls as his football teammates and that it doesnât matter if youâve grown up together, youâre not one eitherâ she glanced at Minato and a soft smile appeared on her mouth. âHis father was clumsy and dense for these things too, but he was more considerate.â
Both left the house and stayed in the doorstep for a moment. A cold breeze blew past them, leaving their noses freezing, and Naruto started shivering while he shrugged to emphasize the fact that he had left the comfort of the kotatsu to see her home, and she laughed.
âI got itâ she took a few steps ahead and turned, walking backwards. âTomorrow, Iâll invite you to hot chocolate so you can forgive meâ his eyes glinted as they went through the gate and started walking up the street; he was too predictable. âSo, why donât you wait here till I reach my house?â
âAre you crazy? My mumâll have my head if she sees me through the kitchen window, and be assured sheâll be watching by now.â
Both started walking up the street with their hands in their pockets. The street was empty and only their steps and breaths broke the silence. Their shadows danced back and forth as they entered and exited the beams of light of the street lamps which bordered the street.
âHey, how are you doing with History? Remember that the exam is next week and you need to pass it or youâll get suspended of your club activities until the end of the year.â
He hid his face in the neck of his anorak and Sakura furrowed her brow.
âIâm really trying, but you know Iâm not good at memory thingsâŠâ
She sighed.
âI could help you, you knowâ he lifted his head and looked at her, his eyes wide. âI could make you some timelines and a summary with the most important points, and you can come home to review at the weekend.â
âReally?!â he threw his arms around her. âYouâre the best!â he seemed to think about it for a moment. âAfter Hinata, of course.â
He let go with a big smile and kept on walking, his steps longer and with a small happy gait. However, he stopped just before reaching her door.
âBut, what about your entrance exams, Sakura-chan? You start them in February, right?â
She smiled and punched him lightly on the arm.
âDonât worry about that. Iâm a very diligent girl and Iâm ahead of my study plan.â
He seemed relieved.
âAnd? Are you going to tell me which university are you aiming at?â
Sakura frowned and marched to the gate.
âNo. I donât want you to laugh at me if I canât enter in my first option.â
âOh, come on. You know I wouldnât do thatâ she shook her head stubbornly. âOkay, but itâs not as if youâre aiming for Todai, you knowâŠâ
She turned her face away to avoid him seeing the blush that warmed her face despite the cold.
âYou can go now to see your matchâ she opened the door. âAnd if your mum asks, you walked me to the door.â
âYes!â he turned around and ran down the street, waving at her.
Sakura moved her head, chuckling as she heard the loud noise his fence made when he slammed it shut, and then, she entered. She was quite often surprised by the sharp intuition her friend possessed, even though sometimes he said things without thinking. And he was right once again, as Todai University was one of the two options she had written on her career survey before the summer holidays. Years before, she had made the decision of being a doctor, when her mother had taken her by the hand, they had walked to a park and there, sitting on a bench, she had told her that one day soon she would not be with her anymore, that she had to be a good girl so her father would not worry, and that she had to become a beautiful strong woman who knew how to face what awaited her in life.
She breathed deeply and closed her eyes for a moment so she could ease the pain in her heart. She was trying hard to accomplish all that. She had learnt not to cry in front of her father, and to make him smile when he was sad. She had kept her lifelong friends and she had made some more along the way. She had hidden her hurt when her father had started talking about the woman he had met when he was in the department store while he was looking for a present for her sixteenth birthday, when she thought that he would love her mother till the end of his life⊠She had been a brilliant student, earning merits, getting the best marks in all the subjects, and she had chosen the best public university so his father had not had to pay the expensive fee of a private one. Though she had chosen Keio University as a second option at her homeroom teacherâs insistence, her only aim was Todai.
Just in front of the door of the house, she breathed deeply once again, trying to calm herself so her father would not guess any of her thoughts. After all, she had to be a good girl until the end.
