SASUSAKU Month Day 3: Medicine
Rating : T (for language and gore)
Summary: It’s shinobi basics: never let your medic get injured.
Medicine
Hot blood pooled into his hand, dripping between his fingers as he pressed firmly against the deep knife wound beneath the thin, slitted material. He gritted his teeth in agitation as his efforts seemed more and more futile. He was never one for this.
“This isn’t working.” he bit out, trying to remain calm, but she was faltering and they didn’t have much time.
“Hold like this.” she managed to instruct between her long, strained breaths, repositioning his hand to better stop the bleeding. He nodded quickly, mimicking the way she pressed her palm firmly and splayed her fingers over her lower abdomen.
“Now what?”
When he received no response, his gaze shot up to see her head lull back against the tree, her eyelids drooping closed.
“Hey!!” he snapped suddenly, giving her a rough shake as best he could with his solitary hand. “Don‘t you do that!” she startled slightly, but her eyes were still distant, glassy. “Sakura, look at me.” he insisted gruffly, trying to catch her floating gaze. It took a moment, but she managed to focus in on him, though he knew he didn’t have long before he lost her again. “What next?”
“You…” she paused in confusion, before pushing on. “It’s too much, too fast, you need to…”
“What?” he pressed.
“You need to cauterize it... “
He stared at her, dumbfounded, dread pooling in the center of his stomach as he lowered his gaze to where their hands were pressed together hopelessly over the delicate sliver that had perfectly cut through her central artery.
“Fuck.” he breathed out.
“You have to be fast.” she insisted, reaching for her kunai and pressing it flatly against his chest. With a thick swallow, he carefully withdrew his hand, leaving her to apply pressure to the wound alone, and took the blade.
She placed her free hand against his face, leaving a bloody smear against his hot flesh and faint stubble. His gaze rose quickly, and knew she could see his fear.
“It’s okay. It’s going to be okay.” she told him softly.
“Stay awake.” he replied lowly. “Promise me.”
She nodded faintly. “I will.”
Steeling himself, he pulled away from her, moving quickly to build a fire and heat the metal. His head was spinning as he set to work, watching her carefully from the corner of his eye. Despite her promise, she was completely depleted and he didn’t know how long she would remain conscious nor if he could do this without her instruction.
He had failed one of the most crucial tasks of any mission.
Never let your medic get injured.
To make matters worse, they were a two man squad, a good hundred miles from the nearest civilization, and his medic also happened to be his bride of three months.
Once the blade glowed orange and the once black steel sang it’s quiet song of strain, he exhaled a shaky breath and returned to her side. Their eyes met and he saw determination burn through her haze as she nodded firmly that she was ready.
“What about infection?” he asked hurriedly.
This was primeval and risky, what would save her now could kill her in the next few days.
“We don’t have another option.” she grabbed his wrist, the usual strength of her grip was almost lax in comparison, pulling it just above where she kept pressure over the wound. “I can handle it.”
“Kami.” he rasped, wishing their roles were reversed, wishing his own medical jutsu wasn’t so weak and lacking. “Okay, on three.”
She nodded, gritting her teeth, turning her face skyward, eyes closed tight. “One,” he murmured, and she mouthed along with him. “Two.” With one last squeeze, she removed the linen from her skin, taking what blood she could with her and he faced the open wound. With resolve, he lowered the kunai, feeling her grip on his wrist tighten. “Three.”
The hot metal met her skin with a sickening sizzle and she let out a gut wrenching cry, Sasuke held firm as her body naturally jolted away from burning heat. Sakura trembled in pain as she bit down on her bloodied fist, most certainly bruising and breaking skin.
“It worked.” he breathed, seeing the fountain of blood now horribly seared shut. “Fuck, it worked.”
She nodded, tears of pain streaming down her face, as she evaluated the wound. “Y-you did good, good clean burn.” she told him, her voice breathless.
He looked up to see her manage a smile. “That wasn’t so bad, huh?” she asked with a weak laugh.
He shook his head in disbelief and annoyance before grabbing her by the back of the neck and kissing her soundly for that. They weren’t out of the woods yet, but the crisis was over. “We have to keep moving, find shelter.”
She nodded as he gently helped her to her feet, his sole arm looping beneath her arm and around her waist as she reached and took hold of his opposite shoulder. Without another word he leapt off deep into the forest.
…
She hissed loudly as she disinfected the second degree burn later that night, her feet kicking in protest to the pain, digging up dirt.
“What can I do?” he asked, as he watched his wife dress her own wound.
She nodded toward her supplies. “Hand me that.”
He reached for the linen bandages.
“No, not that.” she barked. “That.”
He reached for the next instrument that he could not identify.
“No, the ointment.” she told him at last, pointing with more precision.
He complied glumly. “I’m useless.”
“No, not completely.” she smiled through the pain, before cursing under her breath as the cool syrup touched her scorched skin. “Now the bandage.”
He did as she said, helping her bind and tie the linen around her torso snugly from behind before she tied it off.
“There, that will have to do till morning when I can see to it properly.” she announced, before falling heavily against his chest from where she sat between his knees, perspired and exhausted. They both were. The air was heavy and they’d traveled fifteen miles without stop.
He settled more securely against the cavern wall, moving his legs to better accommodate her.
Feeling her still trembling a little, he found his arm carefully snake around her waist as his lips pressed gently to the side of her temple, leaving a trail of quick, warm kisses, quite senseless with relief.
“Mmm.” She hummed contentedly. “The best medicine… See? You are good for something.”
He sighed again at her mirth, resting his head against hers tiredly. “Go to sleep, Sakura.”
