Saw steven strogatz's talk today, and i have thoughts that imma dump here because i can.
so for those who aren't familiar, steven strogatz is a mathematician pretty well renowned for his contributions to nonlinear dynamical systems. His talk today was on sync and my advisor said i should try to go, so i dragged @xo-mochi on a holy pilgrimage to umd in order to see the talk.
So he talked about self-synchronizing oscillators today (think heart cells, fireflies, neurons firing, etc.) and he went over two historic models, but tbh i'm more interested in applications to math physiology. namely, i'm curious about glycolytic oscillations. (yea yea ik that i was supposed to move on to new things but i think glycolytic oscillations are neat and i dont think that my advisor is gonna be too upset) this paper found that glycolytic oscillations partially sync up in body conditions, and i was wondering if there exists a modification of a model like smolen's or goldbeter-lefever's that accounts for this partial sync. my instincts say probably, but i haven't found anything in a quick cursory glance, so i'll take a look at trying to implement that over break. the fact that the synchronization is only partial probably means it's something more complicated than just phase advancement going on, but it's worth a shot. he specifically mentioned limit-cycle oscillators and mentioned the kuramoto model, so i'll look into that and see if thats a helpful starting place. he also said that he thought nonlinear dynamics was a dying field and the audience got PISSED which i thought was very funny lmfao. but hey so it goes.
but yea does the math side of tumblr think this might not be a stupid idea? i do think i may be getting in over my head, but when have i ever not been.
