i’ve been using the signal app lately, and was curious so i went poking around the source code, available at github:

i knew it was an electron app. i really don’t like electon apps btw. it’s all nice and all but i really don’t like them.
anyway i noticed they use sqlite all over. then i found this one biggy file called db.sqlite but find it’s encrypted. ah they must use a modified version of sqlite called sqcipher of course. so i went to look for the key and it didn’t take long to find it. it was in the parent directory in a plaintext file called config.json.

and of course the key works to decrypt. and i’m able to browse everything the whole history. everything chat logs msgs everything.
but why? whis is this like this? why encrypt if it’s like this, just use sqlite unecrypted. lol.
after this, i went looking on the internets and discover articles explosion of articles all over the place, and that this problem was first discoverd by a 17 year old some 2 years ago!
and it’s a still problem today. and they recently upgraded sqlcipher too according to the git logs i see but i see they still haven’t done anything about the key.
so what? yes, you’re right it’s not that big of deal that they do this. but now knowing this just make doubly sure your phone or computer or laptop that it’s protected and that nobody can gain access to it. but this also makes me concerned about the over all security of signal in general.
