Today may be D&D Sunday but this particular story is from weeks past
My party was traveling from one city to another, 7 days on the road. Every morning I’d make a comment on the birds that were chirping that morning, usually Mourning Doves.
On this particular morning I said “Mourning Doves” with just a tad bit too much pizazz for one of my players liking..
Before I go any further let me explain to you something about these Mourning Doves, see the party had acquired a voyer, if you will, a watcher, in this city and he was quite intrigued with them and so he sent a mechanical Mourning Dove to track them. With that in mind imagine my shock and horror when-
“THE BIRDS WORK FOR THE GOVERNMENT! SPY BIRDS!!!”
……….PANIC
Lulu, a Druid who had just accused the birds of being mechanical, I asked her “which birds do you want to talk to about being government spy birds?” I gave her 4 different birds to choose from, she chose Mourning Doves.
Uh oh
I ask her to roll a D6, to determine which of the six Mourning Doves she’d be talking to. As a good DM I preselect my numbers for checks, of course I choose lucky number six for my spy bird and imagine my shock when she gets a six.
The party’s reaction to hearing me go “this bird seems a little…off. As you look closer you start to make out metal joints, false feathers and eyes with no sparkly behind them… it’s a mechanical bird” I’m sure the screaming was heard several rooms over
Morale of the story? Spy birds will be found, murdered and the trackers hidden inside them will be given to a squirrel who is told that if he stops moving it will explode.
