Written by Joelle Charbonneau, NEED is a thriller novel centering around a website set out to give you what you need… for a price. Kaylee, a girl in search for a kidney for her sick brother, must quickly uncover the truth behind NEED before the already devastating body count gets too high. Overall, the plot was decently captivating, but it often felt like it was being dragged on, as the author occasionally threw in random things that felt unnecessary to the plot. The characters themselves felt pretty bland, as they acted like the average YA characters. Centering around Tea, a girl born with the gift of necromancy, The Bone Witch tells the tale of a naive girl’s path to power and eventual darkness. The plot itself is inherently unique, with its intricate lore of its eight kingdoms and twists on the stereotypical learning arc of the main character. However, my personal favorite aspect of The Bone Witch is the way the story itself is presented. The novel is narrated as a flashback, with glimpses of the present weaved in to give the reader insight as to Tea’s personal thoughts on particular chapters of her life. This also creates the perfect amount of suspense, as the reader knows the end of the story just as it begins to unfold.
