SPOTS in the air
Lily Brynes started SPOTS by accident. It was a few days before Valentineās Day, and Lily and her boyfriend decided to ditch materialistic gifts in exchange for personal ones. So Lily decided to bake cupcakes. Not just any cupcakes, though:Ā these cupcakes had the coupleās photo on them. When they were ready, she posted a picture of them on her personal Instagram account. Shortly after, she started to receive texts from her friends and family inquiring about where they could get cupcakes with their photos on them. After sending out more than 20 Valentineās Day orders, her mind was blown when she received an email from an employee atĀ Jonathan Adler Enterprises, a famous interior design company, requesting to place an order for what Lily was calling "SPOTS." She had a choice to make: continue working for one of the countryās most prestigious hospitality groups, or take a chance on her newfound passion. She chose the path less taken, and, with nothing at her disposal except her home kitchen and an Instagram account, spent the next month working to buildĀ SPOTS. Itās been 6 months since then and things have progressed at an incredible rate. SPOTS mini cupcakes are no longer baked out of Lilyās apartment - they're produced in a large commercial kitchen. Today, hundreds of cupcakes go out the door each month to a high-profile list of clients that includesĀ ESPN,Ā LinkedIn, andĀ Twitter. The cupcakes are custom-made with pictures, logos, or any other design imaginable - and they are delivered within 48 hours. For Lily, itās been the six months of a lifetime: āIām overwhelmed in the best way possible,ā she says. āI just never realized the impact social media could have.ā Sometimes the best businesses are stumbled upon. #longlivesmallbusiness
