Jep, het werk van Neal Fox is nogal fucked up - of op z'n minst een beetje verontrustend. Gelukkig laat hij in een interview met ‘Hunger TV’ weten niet helemaal gestoord te zijn:
I do illustration work for money but most of what I do I don’t really like to think of as illustration because it implies you are illustrating someone else’s brief. Most of the time I’m just drawing my own ideas. I’ve always loved drawing since I was a kid. One of the best things about it is that unlike most mediums it doesn’t cost anything, with just some ink and paper you can create another world. It’s a kind of alchemy.
I get inspired by different characters from pop culture, usually subversive people. I like to take them out of context and create new landscapes and situations using a language of archetypes and ideas from film, literature, painting, history, all over the place really. Hopefully I can create something new and surprising out of it all. I’m still trying to work out what it is I’m doing really but someone described me as a boozed up plastic surgeon recently which was funny.
