||| CHICAGO OVERGROUND ||| Makaya McCraven performances at Polish Triangle, Comfort Station, & Plein Air Café
Chicago Overground closes this August with three free public performances by drummer, producer and improviser Makaya McCraven.
Over the last half decade, McCraven has become known as one of Chicago's busiest and most committed sidemen, performing and recording with an array that includes Bobby Broom, Raj Mahal, Occidental Brothers Dance Band International, and Fareed Haque.
Work under his own name has been trickling out in recent years and is similarly diverse--from 2012's more straight-ahead Split Decision to 2013's post-dub electronic release Living Beats.
For his Chicago Overground outings, McCraven will be reviving ideas and collaborations from the Uncanned Music-curated Spontaneous Composition series at The Bedford in Wicker Park where between January 2013 and May 2014 he led over 50 improvised performances with a fluid cast of Chicago's finest (including Matt Ulery, Marquis Hill, Jeff Parker, Joshua Abrams, Junius Paul, and others).
These performances are organized in anticipation of McCraven's forthcoming International Anthem release In the Moment, a collection of organic beats and post-produced recordings that were captured at The Bedford over the one-and-a-half year series.

Happy Birthday, Dear Mr. Robert Carlyle! Last year I wanted to write a tone poem for an actor friend (on the occasion of his achieving a most venerable age). I was motivated, but very rusty, and lacked a start to get the project going. Luckily I happened upon your reading of Robert Burns' "Thou Gloomy December" (before its removal from YouTube). Many of the words of the poem were beyond my ken, but the way they were uttered made it plain. In Burns' example I found what I needed for my project. It's strange to say that such a chilly poem would bring warm memories, but it did. Your reading also had me remembering a childhood fascination with all things Scottish that began with the love of a long ago great aunt. She looked and sounded like Findlay Currie (in a house dress) and would hug any child within reach to her breast and hold them there until they ran out of air and stopped struggling. It was a joy to be reminded of the musical lilt in her manner of speech and the rhythm of a dour but great & loving heart. So with my thanks, if ever you find it awkward, or your admirers themselves are at a loss to express their fondness, I hope this little tribute will come to mind ...a reminder of the muse that can live in both an actor's voice and an audience's ear... This Wednesday, January 29th, 2014, is the return of the Quintet to The Bedford (1612 W Division St, Chicago, IL).  The last time drummer Makaya McCraven, guitarist Jeff Parker, bassist Junius Paul, vibraphonist Justin Thomas, and trumpeter Marquis Hill hit together in the vault, Dave Vettraino was there (as always) to eternalize the amazing, unrelenting instrumentals and potent contextual relevance of their performance.
Heard in the above sound, Makaya's kick drum locks into a bombastic slow-motion pulse with Junius's double bass bump, Marquis and Justefan get hypnotic while Parker rains acid with his guitar. 22 seconds in, the bar crowd erupts in the next room after Brent Seabrook's slap-shot flushed the Bruins down the toilet in game 4 of the Stanley Cup, which evened the series at 2 games apiece.
Not sure if the Blackhawks are even playing this week, and there are certainly no championships on the line, but regardless we invite you cordially to come experience some newer rare and rich occurrences this Wednesday January 29th from 9pm-11pm in the vault.
