Daily excerpt from today's writing, chapter 4 of Second Star to the Right:
Kadek yanked the top doona cover off his king-sized bed and bundled it around Efnisien until he felt like he was inside a fluffy, fabric cloud. Kadek stood in front of him, and took both of Efnisien’s hands in his, holding them in his warm ones. ‘Listen to me,’ Kadek said. ‘You can tell me I’m wrong later, but I’m going to make some guesses because I’m not bad at this. You’re freaking out because we did some stuff you don’t normally do with Arden. You’re freaking out because you’ve never done anything like that with me before and we just went from zero to me giving you a handjob while pretending you’re my new secretary and I’m your strict, mean boss. You and me are used to having an occasionally snarky banter with each other, and you’re thinking you have to snap back into that instantly, and you’re not giving yourself any goddamned grace after going through a scene like that, which you’re already devaluing by saying that anyone can handle it. Don’t do that to me. I worked hard on that scene.’ Efnisien blinked up at Kadek in shock, eyes wide, because out of everything, he didn’t expect a lecture about that. Kadek’s smile was gentle, and reproving. ‘Yeah, there we go, babe. That’s it. I’m part of this too. That scene was hard on you, like I told you it would be. If it was too hard on you, the time to talk about that will be later, after you get some rest, some warmth, something to drink and something to eat. And to head off my dom drop, I need you to understand that I crafted that scene in advance, thinking about different contingencies based off different outcomes, studying that contract, and all your limits, to find a way to introduce you to this without babying you. You know I do that, and I definitely think you’re worth that. I’m scared too, Ef, you weren’t the only person doing that wild-as-balls speedrun.’ Efnisien kept blinking up at him, and Kadek reached out slowly and smeared the tears away from under Efnisien’s eyes, the touch careful and sure at the same time. ‘See?’ Kadek said. ‘It’s not me against you. I promise.’
