Vader by the comm when He is about to do something dangerous: "do you remember the last thing I said to you?" Luke at the other side of the comm glances at Leia and then closes his eyes: "you said remember I love you." It just came into my mind. I NEEDED to tell someone. You are Free to write a fic or do what you want with this.
âThat is correct,â Vader said.  âDonât forget.â
The comm disengaged, and Luke froze. He closed his eyes, reached out into the Force, but his father was shielding against him. Without opening his eyes, he grabbed Leiaâs hand before she could send the shuttle to hyperspace.
âLuke!â
âHeâs going to do something stupid and get himself killed, Leia!â
âHeâs Darth Vader!â
âHeâs our father!â Luke tapped a code into the comm.
âPiett.â
âAdmiral. You need to keep Lord Vader on the ship. Stall him. Distract him. Do whatever it takes. And give me priority access to his private hangar.â

Continuing on to Vaderâs estate, first contact with a certain princess, and Vader makes an important decision.
Part 1
Part 2
The estate Vader had selected was on a sparsely populated planet in the Outer Rim, near both Naboo and Tatooine. Â It was secluded but a location where he seldom spent much time unless his temper was worse than usual or his health was approaching crisis.
And of necessity, it had a very well-equipped medical center, something he could thank both his former master and his current for. Â The center was staffed by top of the line medical droids. Â It would be enough for Yoda if anything could be, though the old master protested when Vader pointedly escorted him there.
Vader pointed at the small Jedi. Â âYou do not get to die while my son still needs you. Â Get the medical care you need. Â You have the time. Â Luke is going to be contacting his friends. Â He does not need you hovering over him while he does so.â Â Reluctantly, he added, âI will not start training him without telling you. Â Let the droids help you.â
Eventually, Yoda agreed, and Vader left the medical wing. Â Then he went to find his son, even knowing his presence would probably be even less helpful than Yodaâs. Â Lukeâs light drew him in a way he hadnât expected and didnât quite understand, perhaps wasnât willing to understand, but he followed it.
Even drawn that way, he kept a distance when he found his son in the communications room, the room heâd shown the boy and given him permission to use. Â But Luke wasnât using any of the communications options. Â Instead, he sat before a station with his eyes closed. Â A moment after Vader arrived in the doorway, Luke looked up at him.
âHave you already contacted your princess?â
âNot yet. Â I wanted to talk to you first. Â Is Yoda all right?â
âThe medical droids are tending to him. Â I do not know the details yet.â Â He folded his arms, studied his son. Â âWhat other promises do you want from me?â
Though Luke winced, he lifted his chin. Â âLeiaâs going to want to see me. Â It should probably be somewhere neutral, since your bargain with me doesnât mean you and she are allies.â
Vader rolled his eyes. Â âI have no more desire for your Rebels to descend on my private retreat than you have to see the massacre that would likely result. Â Since you wish to rescue your smuggler friend, Tatooine seems the obvious destination. Â I will take you. Â I do not need to return to my ship for a few more days. Â What else do you want, child?â
Luke took a deep breath. Â âYour word you wonât track the transmission.â
âYou have it. Â Your friendsâ safety was part of the bargain we made.â
âThanks.â Â His shoulders relaxed. Â âHow secure is the transmission? Â How much is it safe to say?â
âIf your princess secures it on her end, it is fairly secure. Â Those who can access my transmissions are rare.â
âAll right.â Â For a moment, Luke didnât move. Â Then he activated the secure comunit.
Without asking Vader to leave the area. Â Vader was surprised by the omission, but as long as his son didnât ask him to go, he had no intention of doing so. Â He was far enough away he couldnât see the codes Luke entered, though he could always access the system later. Â That, however, would go against their bargain. Â Unless Luke was in danger, he wouldnât do it. Â He did hear the pass phrases Luke and the princess exchanged once theyâd connected, but although Luke glanced at him, the boy made no effort to lower his voice.
Perhaps his interactions with Yoda had bought him some trust? Â Vader wasnât sure, but he hoped so. Â If this was to work, the boy had to trust him at least a little. Â At least enough to keep his word when bound to a pact.
Luke glanced at him while the princess moved to a secure area. Â Iâm here, Father. Â Doesnât that say something already?
I suppose it does.
Smiling a little, Luke nodded. Â Then the princess was back, and the boy turned his attention to negotiating with someone who was almost as stubborn as he was and less than pleased to learn that Luke wanted to change their whole plan for rescuing that irritating smuggler.
Especially when Luke refused to explain why he suddenly wanted to meet on Tatooine beyond that he had a new plan he thought would work. Â
At last, she agreed to meet him on Tatooine in three days, with the Wookiee and the droids. Â When they disconnected, Luke sagged back in his seat and rubbed his hands over his face.
âAre you all right?â Â Vader was feeling an unexpected touch of guilt and wasnât sure what to do about it.
âGive me a minute.â Â His voice was muffled in his hands, and he made no attempt to move. Â
Vader took a few cautious steps forward, not wanting to crowd the stubborn child but also genuinely concernedâan emotion he didnât bother to shield.
Eventually, Luke looked up, met Vaderâs eyes through his mask, and offered a small, shaky smile. Â âIâm all right, Father. Â Justâshe isnât happy now, but sheâll be more unhappy when she finds out the whole story.â
âWhich you havenât told her.â
âNo.â Â He sighed.
Tentatively, Vader reached out and rested a hand on his boyâs shoulder, alert to any sign the touch was unwelcome. Â When Luke only leaned into the support, he relaxed a bit.
âNo matter how secure the connection, this didnât feel like something to say over a com line.â Â He sighed again. Â âShe wonât react well no matter how I tell her, but if she can see that weâre working together, see that Iâm not hurt, it might make a difference. Â Especially if weâre offering to save Han.â
âWould the peace offering of already having saved him make a difference? Â For me, it is as simple as walking into Jabbaâs Palace and demanding he give me Solo.â
âWonât that raise suspicion? Â With the Emperor, I mean.â
âNo. Â Provided your smuggler stays out of sight, I can say that I took him as bait for you.â
Luke winced, and Vader started to withdraw his hand. Â Luke reached up and grabbed it, holding it in place. Â âIâm not upset with you,â he said. Â âWell, not about that. Â Itâs a good plan, one with far less risk than what we were thinking.â
âIf we get there a day ahead of her, it can be already taken care of when she arrives. Â It might go some way to showing good intentions.â
Though Luke considered it for a long moment, he shook his head in the end. Â âNo. Â Sheâd hate being left out of it even more. Â Itâs a solid plan, and I think Iâll probably be able to convince her to go along with it, but it has to be her decision.â
âThen it will be. Â We are less than a dayâs flight from Tatooine. Â We have two days of training time before we leave.â
âItâll give us a chance to find out how Yodaâs doing, too.â
Vaderâs hand on Lukeâs shoulder tightened without meaning to.
âFather?â
âI apologize.â Â He forced his prosthetic to loosen its grip.
For a moment, Luke stared up at him with wide eyes. Â Then the boy shook his head. Â âIâm not leaving, Father. Â Youâll be there with me on Tatooine, and Iâll come back here with you afterwards. Â Whatever Yoda or Leia says about it.â
Unwilling though he was to admit it, part of Vader relaxed at Lukeâs reassurance.
âWhat now?â the boy asked.
âYou need to eat and rest if weâre to get any training accomplished tomorrow. Â If you will come with me?â
Sitting at a table with his son and watching the boy eat was a surreal experience, partly for how normal it should have been, had their lives gone differently. Â More, Vader could sense that the child wanted to ask him something but wasnât sure of how heâd take it. Â Guessing that the topic was his own health, Vader chose not to invite the question. Â There would be another time for that. Â Luke was exhausted. Â Instead, Vader watched over Luke as he ate and escorted the boy to a suite of rooms across from his own after the meal.
Only when he sensed that the stubborn child had actually gone to sleep did Vader go to his own rooms across the hall. Â They contained a hyperbaric chamber that was, at the moment, his best chance for what he needed to do next.
In truth, the hyperbaric chamber in the medical wing would be better suited for this; it was equipped for when his health was more precarious or compromised than usual, as this was the estate he often retreated to at such times. Â The hyperbaric chamber in his rooms was a bit less complex, but it had the benefit of being farther from a certain old Jedi Master Vader would prefer to avoid. Â Both because sensing Yoda would do nothing for his own temper and because the Dark side that was so much a part of him might actually set back Yodaâs healing.
So Vader went to the hyperbaric chamber in his rooms, which did have the benefit of being closest to Luke. Â For what he needed to do, that proximity might. . . help.
Within, the mechanisms helped him remove his mask and helmet and some of his armor, what could be removed without a worse impact on his health. Â Going further would require the machines and droids in the medical wing. Â This would have to do.
For a moment, he breathed the oxygenated, medicated air, adjusting to breathing with less support. Â It was always an adjustment. Â Even without his mask, he got assistance just to breathe, but it was less. Â Enough less that he could slow his breathing into a meditative pattern.
It took time and working through the constant pain, but he managed to sink into a tranceâwithout focusing on the Dark side or the negative emotions that fueled it. Â This was not a Jedi trance, by any means, not the mindset of a Lightsider, but it was as close as heâd gotten for more than twenty years.
For long minutes, he maintained that state of mind, ensuring he could hold it. Â The mindset got easier as time passed, and his meditation deepened.
After an extended period in that neutral state, Vader settled further into the support of his seatâand reached for the Light.
Introducing Han. And an actual fairy tale, as recounted by Luke! One of the stories that form the basis of the Bargain in Tatooine culture. This one is, according to Vader, passed down from Shmi.
The fairy tale is a bit influenced by @fiallerilâs Tatooine slave culture (is it possible to write about Tatooine culture without a nod to her brilliant work?) but also very much by the traditions of the Summer Court in classic fairy stories.
This is the last part but for the short epilogue.

Part 3
Part 4
Once again, Vader was in the infirmary heâd designed to deal with his own compromised health to arrange care for someone he disliked. Â His distaste for the disreputable smuggler was no where near as intense as for the old Jedi who was also still present, but it was still a factor. Â Only his sonâs fondness for the man mitigated it slightly.
Not enough he was willing to leave, to let Luke, the princess, and Chewbacca explain while he waited elsewhere. Â
That wasnât going to happen, and Luke had had the sense not to argue when Vader said as much. Â The princess had been. . .less understanding, but she was difficult on a good day. Â Having her choice in partners present did distract her from the argument eventually.
So for now, he was leaning against the wall near the window, with his respirator pointedly not in its stealth mode. Â Luke had rolled his eyes at that omission, but after a moment, heâd muttered something about it being better than it could have been.
âHeâs likely to come out of the carbonite blind,â Vader had pointed out. Â âWould you prefer my presence here to come as an unfortunate surprise to him?â
âYou could just leave,â the princess had snapped.
âAll right, Father, I take your point. Â Youâre still doing it partly because you intend to enjoy his reaction.â
âGranted.â
Luke had radiated exasperation but had left it alone.
Chewbacca was leaning against the wall opposite Vader, watching him. Â The Wookiee hadnât been pleased with Vaderâs involvement, but seeing him walk out of Jabbaâs Palace with the slab of carbonite seemed to have helped a little. Â That Chewbacca had taken the revelation of his relationship with Luke as the only clue necessary to figure out his former identityâand worse, remembered him from the Clone Warsâmight have helped or might not have. Â Vader couldnât tell.
Not yet.
The princess was the one to thaw the carbonite. Â Vader rolled his eyes at her answer when Solo asked who was there. Â Yes, he recognized that it followed from their exchange right before heâd frozen the smuggler. Â It was still ridiculous.
Then Solo froze. Â âVader?â he whispered.
âI am here, Captain Solo. Â I assisted your friends in retrieving you from Jabbaâs Palace. Â They are not under duress.â Â He didnât move away from the wall.
âHe isnât lying,â Luke said. Â âI made a bargain with him.â
âHelp me up,â Solo demanded.
Though the princess wrapped an arm around his back and helped him sit up, she refused to help him out of the bed. Â âStay,â she ordered. Â âI donât completely agree with Luke about the lack of duress, but you and I are free to leave whenever we choose. Â It is, hard as it seems to believe, safe here. Â Lord Vader seems genuinely disinclined to break his pact with Luke.â
âAnd whatâs happened that that makes any kind of sense?â Solo snapped. Â âLast I checked, Vader had a bounty on the kidâs head the size of the Core, and the kid wanted to kill him.â
âBespin changed things,â Luke said quietly. Â He walked over, sat down in a chair beside the bed. Â âI found out the truth. Â Heâs my father, Han.â
âWhat? Â Youâre sure?â
âI am. Â The Force told me he was telling the truth.â
âThe Force, kid?â
His son rolled his eyes. Â âYes, Han. Â If thatâs too much of a stretch for you, even after knowing me for years, I also got it confirmed from someone who was there when I was born.â
The scoundrel scowled. Â âSo you have a lousy father. Â Youâre hardly the only one. Â Why does that suddenly mean youâre cooperating with the Emperorâs pet killer?â
âI am still here, Captain Solo.â
âOh, like youâve never heard it before, Vader!â
Luke sighed. Â âItâs not that simple. Â I chose death over surrender, even knowing the truth about Father. Â Did you spend enough time on Tatooine to know the local traditions?â
âWhat local traditions? Â Theft, disorder, bounty hunting, murder?â
âNo. Â Itâs tradition among those who actually live there, particularly the slave communities. Â Most of the families that lived on Tatooine for more than a generation have slaves in their ancestry somewhere. Â There are many versions of the story of the Kraytâs Bargain.â
âWait. Â Krayts are giant lizards. Â They canât bargain with anyone.â
âItâs a legend, Han. Â A story. Â Do you want to hear this or not?â
âNever thought fairy tales and Darth Vader would be mentioned in the same conversation. Â Fine, kid. Â Tell me your story.â
âIâll summarize,â Luke said dryly. Â âOne thatâs very common is the story of how a teenage slave was about to be sold away from his family. Â His girlfriend was three months pregnant, and he was desperate not to be sold off planet. Â He walked out into the desert one night, praying for anything that would let him get away from his master. Â The implant in both he and his girlfriend kept them from just running.â
Solo settled back into his pillows. Â Though still functionally blind, he was âlookingâ in Lukeâs general direction. Â Chewbacca relaxed against the wall, comfortable enough to listen. Â The princess stared at Vaderâs son as if sheâd never seen him before, as if this was a side of the child sheâd never suspected. Â Vader almost smiled. Â His son was well-versed in Tatooineâs traditions, traditions he hadnât heard since he was a child. Â It was almost pleasant to hear the stories his mother had told him again. Â This story was one passed down from Shmi.
âHe met a krayt under the moons. Â The krayt asked him why he was out under the moons alone, and he was too desperate not to tell. Â He expected the krayt to kill him, but the krayt offered him a bargain. Â If he stayed with the krayt for four months, the krayt would make sure he could free both himself and his chosen mate.
âThough he expected to die when his implant exploded, he took a chance on putting his faith in what the moons had offered him. Â He climbed up on the krayt and let it take him down below the desert cliffs, deep into the earth. Â His implant never activated, and he lived those four months in the glowing caverns the krayt called home, tending to its young. Â At the end of the four months, the krayt offered him a pearl and told him to take it with the kraytâs blessings on both him and his children to be.
âThe slave returned to town with the pearl and sold it to off-worlders, then arranged to have his own contract and his girlfriendâs bought out. Â He still had enough credits left to purchase them a small house and start a business as a mechanic, and his children were raised to respect the krayts.
âOf course, the story got around town. Â A wealthy young man heard it. Â In some versions, heâs the son of the first teenâs former master. Â He decides that he can do anything a slave can, so he gathers supplies for four months in the desert and goes. Â The krayt finds him, and he asks for aid, just as the slave had. Â The krayt offers the same bargain, four months of service in exchange for what he needs for freedom. Â The wealthy young man agrees and stays with the krayt for four months, though he refuses to go near the young. Â That wasnât part of the bargain, he says.
âAt the end of four months, the krayt takes him back to the surface and fills his hands with sand. Â It is what he needs to be free, the krayt tells him. Â Free of his greed, of his lies, of his laziness. Â Then the krayt leaves him to get back to town on his own, none the richer for his four months.â
It was odd how fitting the story Luke had chosen was for them. Â Not that Vader would ever say as much, certainly not to the smuggler. Â But it did fit. Â It was easy to relax against the wall and listen, especially as he was drawing on the Light side of the Force.
Luke fell silent for a moment and glanced at Vader with a slight smile, one Vader almost wished he could return. Â He sent a cautious brush of affection through their bond instead and felt something close to joy when Luke beamed at him. Â
Then the impossible child focused back on his friend. Â âThere are other stories, of course. Â Stories of people who break their bargains with a krayt, even kill it. Â All those who try meet appropriate ends. Â On Tatooine, it is not done to break a bargain with a krayt, nor for the krayt to break a bargain with a Tatooine native who makes it in good faith. Â Theyâre called Kraytâs Bargains, and they are not entered into nor broken lightly.
âBoth Father and I are from Tatooine, and it is a Kraytâs Bargain we made. Â I may have tricked him into it, but he agreed. Â Neither of us will break it lightly.â
Continuing on to actually meeting Leia. And her reaction to this situation, of course.

Part 2
Part 3
For all that Bestine was what passed for a capital on Tatooine, the greater official presence was in either Mos Eisley or Mos Espa, depending on where there had been more trouble recently. Â Those were the ports that criminals headed through. Â While the official outpost was in Bestine, few troops were posted there. Â Besides, it was close to Jabbaâs Palace, and much as Vader hated it, the Hutts did have an arrangement with the Empire.
Bestine was also the closest thing to a luxury destination the desert planet had. Â It had a nice place to stay, at least, and Vader had booked the suite where he and Luke waited. Â Rather, heâd sent Veers in civilian clothes to book the room; Vader had no intention of letting the irritating Princess find out he was on the planet until she was already in the room. Â Bringing Veers into the secrets surrounding this trip had been a risk but a minimal one; he knew he held the generalâs loyalty.
Now, Veers was keeping watch somewhere nearby, waiting for what would come of this meeting.
In the suite, Luke was pacing the sitting room. Â Vader was sitting in a shadowed corner, out of easy sight with his respirator set to stealth mode. Â Normally, he couldnât leave it that way for an extended period; it was slightly less effective, and the loss of support got very painful all too quickly and would eventually be dangerous. Â Now, however. . .
Much as he disliked admitting it, calling on the Light side of the Force had helped him somehow. Â Oh, he wasnât healed, could no more do without the life support the suit offered than he could have right after Mustafar, but the fight to breathe was a little less painful, a little less of a struggle. Â The respirator didnât have to work quite so hard to force air into his ruined lungs.
The decrease in pain, from even such a small change, was staggering.
He doubted it would ever be enough to free him of dependence on a respirator, but heâd take any improvement he could get after more than twenty years of nothing but bad news where his health was concerned.
Especially now, when he actually had someone to live for.
Though heâd tried, twice, to get Luke to calm down a bit, it hadnât worked. Â In fact, reminding Luke he was there seemed to make the boyâs nerves worse, so heâd stopped trying. Â He wasnât quite willing to offer to leave, much as he disliked seeing the child so upset.
Yoda was back at the estate, much to the old Jediâs dismay. Â He hadnât wanted to let them leave without his supervision, but the medical droidâs report had dictated that he needed to spend at least a week under care for a late stage illness. Â With that care, it was curable. Â Without it, the illness would be terminal. Â Vader had refused any arguments to come after getting that information, and theyâd all known that putting off this meeting too long would only make it more difficult.
Yoda had, eventually, been convinced. Â Or at least had conceded that he wasnât going to win the fight that would be necessary to convince Vader otherwise. Â Vader suspected that watching him train his son, in purely Light side techniques and while drawing on the Light himself, had been a big contributing factor to Yodaâs eventual agreement. Â He knew it was not something the Order thought a Sith capable ofâheâd believed the same, once. Â Only his Oath had pushed him to try.
Vader hadnât said it, but he was relieved Yoda had agreed for more than just keeping the old master alive for his sonâs sake. Â This meeting was going to be unpleasant enough.
And a knock at the door warned that it was time. Â Vader sank further into the shadows in his corner. Â Luke had frozen at the sound. Â Now, he shot one half-frantic glance over his shoulder at Vader.
Go on, Kraytling.
Luke nodded, started for the door, and froze again. Â His expression this time was more incredulous than the near panic it had been a moment ago. Â Then he shook his head and walked over to open the door.
Vader felt his mouth curve in a small smirk.
âLeia!â Luke grabbed her and hugged her as soon as he got the door open. Â
Contrary to Imperial rumors, Vader sensed no hint of romantic feelings between them. Â He wasnât sure what to make of that revelation.
âCome in,â Luke continued.
âWhatâs this about a new plan?â the princess demanded once she was inside the room with the door shut behind her. Â âChewie and the droids are on the Falcon, and Lando says everythingâs ready at Jabbaâs Palace. Â Isnât it a bit late in the planning for you to change everything up?â
âI have a new ally,â the child said slowly. Â Vader could feel the boy choosing every word. Â âOne who will make rescuing Han go far more smoothly than the original plan.â
âYou met someone who wants to join the Rebellion on your last mission?â
Vaderâs eyes narrowed, but Luke was already shaking his head.
âNo,â Luke said. Â âHeâs allied to me, not the Rebellion. Â He is, like me, from Tatooine. Â On this planet, thereâs a custom of a type of binding pact, one that you donât break. Â The cultural consequences are. . .unpleasant. Â I tricked him into such a pact, and he considers it as binding as I do, though I didnât expect all the consequences.â
The princessâs eyes narrowed. Â âWho is this person? Â What arenât you telling me?â
âThis isnât a trap. Â I havenât betrayed you. Â I swear it.â
âThat isnât making me feel better.â
Luke flinched.
âI believe you,â Leia said with a sigh. Â âYou know I trust you.â
When Luke took a deep breath and a step back from her, Vader adjusted his respirator back to its standard configuration. Â The controls were not designed for him to use with ease, but the Force compensated. Â He watched both his child and the princess stiffen at the sound that carried through the room.
âVader.â
âYour Highness.â
She straightened with all the imperious, regal bearing sheâd carried in the Senateâor at a court gala. Â âWhat is happening here?â she asked, voice icy.
âThe boy told you that. Â He tricked me into a pact that is culturally binding for both of us, leaving us as tentative allies.â
The princessâs eyes narrowed. Â âHe also said that both he and his ânew allyâ are from Tatooine. Â Luke, I knew. Â You, I find difficult to believe.â
âHard to believe or not, it is the truth.â
She took a half step back, eyes wide at that simple answer. Â âBut youâreâI mean, everyone thinks youâre a former Jedi.â
Luke tensed, but Vader merely rolled his eyes behind his mask. Â Heâd heard that rumor for years. Â âYour point?â
âJedi were raised in the Order. Â Are you lying to Luke?â
âHe isnât,â Luke said immediately. Â âIâd sense it.â Â Though he did glance at Vader with a frown. Â I take it that you had a childhood outside the Order wasnât typical?
Yoda and Obi-Wan have told you nothing, then. Â He looked back at the princess. Â âI am not lying, as he says. Â Your friend is quite sensitive to the Force. Â He would know.â
âThen how? Â And how would Luke know? Â Heâs never mentioned it.â
Vader hesitated. Â He would not be the one to reveal their shared blood if his son didnât want her to know of it.
But Luke took a deep breath. Â âI found out at Bespin. Â He told me, when he told me why he was really chasing me. Â But Iâd always known he spent his childhood on Tatooine. Â I just didnât connect the knowledge to Vader. Â Youâre right that heâs a former Jedi, by the way. Â Obi-Wanâs old student. Â And partner.â Â He met the princessâs eyes. Â âHeâs my father.â
Her eyes widened. Â She took a deep breath. Â A second one. Â âAll right. Â Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. Â Is Darth Vader.â
Though Vader tensed at the sound of his old name, he stifled any response.
âThat does explain the shared Tatooine heritage,â she continued after a moment. Â âAnd that you let yourself get tricked into such a pact.â
âMy sonâs life was at stake,â Vader said quietly. Â âI do not consider this pact too great a price to pay.â
âIâm surprised you care.â
Vader stalked forward a step, furious with the arrogant, condescending princess. Â âI thought he was dead for twenty years. Â When I found out, I pursued him. Â But our familial matters are hardly your concern, Your Highness.â
Her chin went up, but she nodded after a moment. Â âFine. Â What are the stipulations of this pact?â
âThe first one was simple,â Luke said. Â âHe swore he wouldnât let me fall. Â It was the only way Iâd let him pull me up, when I was at risk of literally falling to my death. Â But I meant more than just a fall to my death. Â I also meant a Fall to the Dark side. Â And Father knows it.â
Though Organa flinched at the honorific Luke used, she kept the reaction off her face. Â She was very much a politician, and she also latched onto the part of that pact that was causing the current situation. Â A situation Vader no longer considered a problem, as such, but was sure would still be considered one at best in the princessâs eyes.
ââLet,â you said?â she asked sharply.
âLet,â Vader confirmed. Â âI will not break our bargain. Â I told Luke as much.â
âHe insisted we talk but gave his word he wouldnât hold me.â
âBut youâre still with him?â
âWe did talk. Â We negotiated, to be precise. Â Father is the one who gave his word, but I would not be the one to force him to break that pact without cause. Â That is not as culturally prohibited as Father breaking his word would be, but it still. . .isnât done.â
âI find it hard to believe a cultural imperative from an Outer Rim planet you havenât lived on in decades is so binding to you, of all people, Lord Vader.â
âI came to the Order late,â Vader said coldly. Â âMy childhood was on Tatooine. Â Cultural imperatives learned in childhood are not so easily set aside.â
âAll right, fine. Â I may not understand the cultural imperatives or approve of this situation, but I recognize that a shared cultural background seems to have led here. Â Luke said you negotiated. Â I take it your presence here on Tatooine is a result of that negotiation?â
âMy son wanted your scoundrel rescued. Â That is one of my concessions, in return for his agreement to let me train him.â Â He held up a hand when the princess bristled. Â âIn the Light side, Your Highness. Â Give him more credit than that. Â As you have long suspected and now have confirmed, I have Jedi training. Â Between that and the Jedi Master Luke trained under after Hoth, we will manage.â
The princess planted her fists on her hips and glared up at Vader. Â âWhat other terms did the two of you agree to, then?â
âI agreed to stay with him. Â Well, on his estate when heâs busy; Iâm not going to live on his Star Destroyer. Â Iâm free to come and go as I please, though I agreed to tell him before I leave, and you, Han, Chewie, and the droids will be welcome to come and go as well. Â He and Yoda will both train me.â
The princess looked between Luke and Vader for a moment. Â Luke wrapped an arm around her shoulders, and she accepted the gesture for a moment. Â Then she stepped away and glided to the table by the window. Â She sat down, and Luke moved to sit beside her. Â Vader watched until she turned and looked at him. Â âJoin us, Lord Vader. Â Tell me your plan for Han.â
After a momentâs pause, Vader nodded slightly and stalked across the room. Â He took the third chair and began to explain.
Anakinâand if his son could think of him that way, he could at least try to do the sameâwatched as Luke slipped back into a drugged sleep at the Forceâs prompting. Â Then, reluctantly, he left Lukeâs hospital room and retrieved Lukeâs things, those that had been confiscated when Luke surrendered. Â In particular, he retrieved Lukeâs comlink. Â Heâd made a promise, and he would do his best to keep it, however. . .awkward the doing promised to be.
Piett caught him on his way back to medical and fell into step with him. Â Reluctant though he was to delay his return to his sonâs side for even a moment, he nonetheless slowed his pace so that his short admiral could keep up. Â âYes?â
âI made contact with the Rebels, Lord Vader. Â They were skeptical, but the fact we withdrew from the battle gave me enough credibility to get a ceasefire in place. Â They will be watching us closely, but we can remain in the system without being fired upon. Â They were still more cautious about any further negotiations but said I could tell my commander that they would consider it when you contacted them.â
âAre they aware of who would be contacting them?â
âThey mentioned you by name, my lord.â
So they knew or guessed he had survived the destruction of the Death Star. Â The princessâs work? Â Perhaps.
âThey didnât mention the commander, and as you had not said anything, I didnât feel it wise to do so, either.â
âGood.â Â It meant he would be the one to tell them, as he doubted he would get the information he wanted otherwise, but it was his right. Â âOrder Death Squadron to maintain position and keep prepared for the Rebels to change their minds or for someone to go against the ceasefire. Â Incorporate any other surviving ships that acknowledge my authority, and keep a record of any who refuse to obey. Â Not many ships outside the squadron survived, but make contact with those that have.â
âYes, my lord. Â Three ships have already contacted us for orders, and I passed on the ceasefire command.â Â Piett paused as they reached the door to medical. Â âWith your permission, I will contact the Rebels and arrange to sweep the wreckage for survivors without that action being taken as antagonistic.â
âGranted, but ensure that the squadron retains defensive capabilities and that no ships sweep the wreckage without backup. Â The ceasefire is tentative, and we were shooting at each other not that long ago.â
âOf course, my lord.â
Anakin nodded. Â âDismissed, Admiral.â Â He strode into medical and through to Lukeâs private room. Â Having kept a Force awareness of his son, he wasnât surprised to find the boy was still asleep and undisturbed, but it was still a relief to see his child, even if it was with the red taint of his mask.
Oh, he wished he could see his boy with his own eyes, but that was not possible. Â Perhaps that would change in the future, but for the moment, there was nothing he could do to make it possible.
Refusing to dwell on what was currently impossible, Anakin reclaimed his seat at his sonâs side and activated Lukeâs comlink. Â Perhaps he should do this somewhere else, but while this room was as secure as he could make it, he was still loath to leave his son unguarded for any length of time. Â Luke was deeply asleep; making the call here should be safe enough.
He let the Force guide the code he accessed, as Luke had secured his link and refrained from naming saved contacts. Â The security wasnât enough to keep Anakin out, and the Force told him which contact he needed.
âLuke?â
âI regret to inform you that I am not Luke, Your Highness,â Anakin said carefully, knowing she would recognize his voice.
âVader! Â What are you doing with Lukeâs comlink? Â Where is he? Â Where is my brother, Vader! Â I know heâs alive, but I also know heâs hurt! Â If you hurt him, all the ceasefires in the Galaxy wonât protect you!â
So she knew. Â Anakin had thought as much, from what heâd sensed in Lukeâs mind. Â In one way, that made this easier, even if it would also make the princess angrier. Â âI have not harmed my son, Your Highness. Â He is hurt, yes, but he is recovering. Â He is on my ship. Â He asked me to find out how his friends are in the wake of the battle. Â I have contacted you to learn that information without having to explain to your High Command why I want it, as it is my understanding they do not know of Lukeâs heritage.â Â Nor hers, but Anakin knew better than to bring that up. Â She claimed Luke as her brother, but she would never acknowledge him as her father.
âHow dare you claim to be his father! Â You mutilated him at Bespin.â
Anakin flinched but made no effort to interrupt. Â He could hardly argue the truth of what she said. Â
âHe surrendered to you on the moon, so whatever injuries he suffered, he suffered in your custody. Â That makes his injuries your fault!â
âLeia?â
Anakin winced. Â Heâd woken his son after all. Â Lukeâs voice was dazed and groggy, and he hadnât opened his eyes yet, but he was awake.
âWhyâre you shouting? Â Father? Â Something wrong?â Â Lukeâs left hand groped over the bed, and Anakin quickly clasped it when Luke started to frown, worry filling the Force.
âLuke! Â Are you all right? Â What happened!â
âFather?â Luke asked.
Anakin could sense his son fighting for more awareness, could sense the effort it took Luke to open his eyes. Â âNothing is wrong, Luke,â he said, trying for gentle even through the vocoder. Â He projected affection and concern in an attempt to counter the sound of his vocoder-supported voice.
âAll right.â Â Lukeâs hazy eyes surveyed Anakin and the comlink in his hand. Â âIâll be all right, Leia. Â Father says Iâll be all right.â
âAnd you will,â Anakin said, but even as he spoke, Luke was fading back into a light sleep.
âLuke?â
âLuke is sleeping again. Â He will sleep a great deal as he recovers, but he will recover. Â He will do that better if he knows his friends are well. Â Are you willing to tell me?â
There was a long moment of silence from the link, only the sound of Anakinâs breathing audible in the room.
Finally, the princess said, âLukeâs friends survived the fight. Â Iâm sure youâll understand if I donât give you more details. Â Iâll give him more details when you release him to our custody. Â Iâll make arrangements for a medical shuttle.â
âI will not be making arrangements to transfer my son to an Alliance shuttle, Your Highness. Â He will recover, but he requires medical care. Â The Executor employs the best medics in the Galaxy, and I will not see my son receive inferior care.â
âThe Alliance medics are highly capable, Lord Vader. Â They have cared for Luke for years. Â They cared for him when you maimed him. Â He will feel safer with us than on an unfamiliar, Imperial ship.â
Anakin straightened, though the princess could not see it. Â He would not let her guilt him into doing what she wanted. Â He took a moment before he spoke so he didnât react with anger; that risked bringing Luke back out of the drowsing state heâd slipped into. Â âThe medics of your Rebellion may be as capable as you say, but I do not know them. Â Therefore, I will not trust my son to their care unless he asks. Â He has not. Â And it is his choice that is paramount here, Your Highness. Â If he asks to return to you the next time he wakes, I will make those arrangements. Â Until then, he is remaining aboard the Executor.â Â Anakin hesitated for two cycles of his respirator. Â âIf you wish, you and a small group you select may come aboard to ascertain his well-being and ask him what he wishes to do for yourself.â
âVery well,â the princess stated, at her formal best. Â âExpect my arrival aboard the Millennium Falcon in eighteen hours, Lord Vader.â
âYou will be expected. Â You will be permitted aboard my ship under flag of truce. Â None under my command will act against you or any who accompany you provided you hold yourself and your team to the same standards. Â That includes removing Luke from the ship without his consent.â
âProvided you agree to release him when he asks, that will not be a problem.â
The comlink disconnected, and Anakin set it aside with a sigh.
âI wonât go.â
âWhat?â Â Anakin looked up, met Lukeâs hazy eyes. Â He hadnât sensed his son drift back toward consciousness, and what Luke said made no sense. Â Had the boy dreamed?
âI wonât go, even if Leia asks. Â Not yet. Â You saved me. Â You turned back, for me. Â I donât want to leave, not now.â
Anakin closed his eyes behind the mask. Â He could no longer cry, but Lukeâs words, unexpected and unbelievable, made him want to.

Review: It's 80's sci-fi, so if you're considering reading this book, take that as your warning. But truly this is a great book and a great start to the series. The duel worlds based in science and magic respectively is done originally and I wouldn't think it out of the question to consider this one of the pioneers of that trope. The characters are nuanced in what they want and their actions, the stakes on both sides of the 'curtain' are high and while one could argue this to be formulaic in pattern I think that works to it's advantage as there's quite a lot happening that I find isn't in a lot of classic or modern sci-fi.
not the biggest fan of Piers Anthony just yet, but the little character interactions are quite cute. LOTS of nudity and such, but not unusual for pulp sci fi and fantasy junk.
