They like to stay hidden under coral outcroppings and only come out during the dark of the night or if they're somehow coaxed out of hiding. These fish are endemic only to Cozumel Island and Belize!

“Despite its bright colors, the Splendid Toadfish is a shy creature and is quite difficult to persuade: you usually find it below or around fissures and coral reefs in clean waters, at a depth of approximately 10-25 m. Splendid Toadfish - Sanopus splendidus
The Splendid Toadfish, Sanopus splendidus is a marine, reef-associated fish classified in the Family Batrachoididae, the only Family in the Order Batrachoidiformes. Toadfishes are easily recognized by their characteristic shape, with large, board, flattened head, often with barbels and/or fleshy flaps around their large mouths, and a tapering body.
Sanopus splendidus is attractively patterned in purple. Most of its fins are edged in yellow with the pelvic fin being entirely yellow. It also has a yellow mouth. This species generally lives on sand under crevices or coral heads in clear water, 10-25 m deep. It hunts at night, preying on small fishes, snails and polychaete worms.
The Splendid Toadfish was thought to be only found in Cozumel Island (Quintana Roo, Mexico) but sightings have also been reported in Belize. However, it is not widespread and is Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.

Splendid Toadfish (Sanopus splendidus)
Also known as the Coral Toadfish, the splendid toadfish is a species of toadfish only found off the island of Cozumel. Like most toadfish this species can often be found in its den which is usually located under rocky outcroppings. They rarely come out of this den, and only leave to ambush passing prey. Unlike most toadfish this species is oddly colorful and the exact function of its distinct coloration is not yet known.

The splendid toadfish, (Sanopus splendidus) also known as the coral toadfish, is a species of toadfish entirely endemic to the island of Cozumel (an island in the Caribbean Sea of the easter coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula). Their dens can be spotted by the sloping sand patch. They are very difficult to coax out in the open. Unlike any other member of the toadfish family, the splendid toadfish is distinctive for its vibrant colors. It has bright yellow fins which also contain distinctive patterning, while its head contains dark and white stripes.
