Hello, hi, I'm inflicting this on you just so you know I wasn't lying in the stream. https://www.reddit.com/r/JapaneseFood/comments/24o5as/food_flavored_sodas_teriyaki_takoyaki_and_kimchee/ (yes the OP on Reddit misspelled kimchi)
Once again, terribly sorry.
[context: on stream a few days ago, i was pointing out the takoyaki drink that's everpresent in splatoon 1]
[post linked in ask]
oh no i believe you LOL a friend of mine, in a context completely unrelated to splatoon, had recently told me about how at an anime convention like a decade or so ago they had tried teriyaki flavored ramune and it was the most disgusting thing they ever drank...i didnt know they also had made takoyaki flavor...and reading the comments, even more fucked up flavors
takoyaki soda is an affront to god and should never be made again so as long as humans walk this earth (finger on monkeys paw curls)
It’s mentioned (correct me if I’m wrong) that inkbrushes need to be repaired after 10 uses, is this the case for all brushes? Also, do certain weapons need to on occasion undergo repairs?
just the tube needs to be replaced. other brush weapons dont have tubes so probably not like any piece of equipment with multiple parts, surely all weapons would have the potential to break and/or would need maintenance, repairs, or part replacements. inkbrush is just a rare example where we're told exactly what kind of thing gets repaired/replaced on a weapon
dynamo also needs to be oiled on the regular too!
I have a question regarding Splatoonlore.ink's plant species list, specifically under the addition of sugarcane being due to the existance of processed sugar, while it is plausible to be cane sugar, it should be equally if not more likely that the sugar was derived from any other plant that produces sucrose. Examples including pineapples, apricots, and sugar beets, hell even some legumes can be processed into sugar.
And if that were the case, shouldnt sugarcane be ommitted since its only proof of existing (atleast on the spreadsheet) is by a product that can easily be made by other plants that are already on the list?
I wouldnt say it's "equally or more likely" the sugar in splatoon doesn't come from the largest sugar producing crop on earth when there's nothing that suggests it would be extinct. Occam's razor.
however youve made me realize i forgot about sugar beets being an option lol, that is the second largest source of the world’s sugar
I am drawing a world-building thing regarding the Splatoon equivalent of Latin American street foods namely a squid-shaped quesadilla with some casein y leche de anacardo based cheese and shrimp, and Cephalo-Pelo ceviche made by hairdressers that is soaked in a bath of salted limón juice and spicy peppers.
I decided that the Splatoon equivalent of Mexico City could be called Anguliapetl City which is a pun because Mexico City was founded (according to legend, someone witnessed an eagle fighting a snake on a cactus) and how eels and Snakes are often compared to Each other, and how angulia (Eel) and águila (Eagle). And the Nahuatl suffix -petl means City. The country could be called Los Eastados Unidos de Anguliapetl officially but Anguilapetl is probably the common name.
Cephaloperu (scrapped calling it Poulperu) is a mountainous country with unique elevation, they made Cephalo-Pelo ceviche the national dish.
Now here’s a few questions about world building:
1. Is it possible that inkfish of those places probably started harvesting a variety of corn SPECIFICALLY to Harvest Huitlacoche? (A type of fungus that is often served as a vegetarian delicacy item in Mexico)
2. Could the altitude and air pressure of Cephaloperu result in inkfish tourists having unusual experiences?
very fun ideas! i think its cool to imagine different parts of the world outside of inkopolis and the splatlands. IDK if you had thought about this already but something I'd take advantage of here is the fact that inkfish canonically used axolotls as livestock in the past! Here's another post where I talk about this more. It's implied that the inkfish of the splatlands, located in japan, stopped using axolotls as livestock for some reason. but since axolotls are native to mexico, maybe the people of the Splatoon equivalent to mexico didn't stop using them as livestock? maybe they have famous axolotl meat delicacies? Maybe they went crazy with breeding different types axolotls? there's interesting world building potential there. also, did you know splatoon's art director seita inoue spent much of his childhood in mexico? now to answer the questions:
Sometimes i'll get asked hyperspecific questions just like this about if x thing exists or is possible in the splatoon world that has basically 0% chance of being confirmed and literally nobody could know the answer to. and all i can say is: the splatoon world is as vast and complex as our own. of course it's possible! they eat corn in the splatoon world too btw. Really as long as a concept doesn't require a creature to be alive that's canonically extinct, or anything else that blatantly defies canon, if it happened on our earth, it's possible it happened in the splatoon world.
Who knows, maybe? Zero canon info to work with here aside from knowing that they breathe air.
not the most satisfying answers LOL </3

ok um. what's the second worst piece of splatoon lore do u know
thanks for asking! <3
The tanuki statue in Inkopolis plaza has visible testicles in its concept art! you know. as tanuki statues do.
unfortunately it appears to have been castrated for the final game... but appearances are not what they seem.... if you can clip through the building. zoom in closer.
there is in fact, a nutsack clipping through the roof of the building containing the squid sisters studio.
(screenshot is from a model rip of S1 inkopolis plaza. if anyone can get a screenshot to confirm if the balls are there in s3 inkopolis plaza PLEASE let me know)
hey! was wondering if the japanese dialogue for squid vs octopus says that non-anthropomorphic octopuses are extinct?
「イカとタコって 歴史の授業で習ったぞ! スッゲー昔に 海に住んでた生き物だろ?」 (I learned about squids and octopuses in history class! Weren't they these creatures that lived in the ocean a looong time ago?) ワタシも習ったことあります! いろんな料理に使われてたんですよね~!」 (I also leaned about them! Weren't they used in all sorts of cuisine~?)
yes jp dialogue for this splatfest skips any mention of the theme being "controversial" and instead has talk of squids and octopus as food.
curiously, there are real ass aquatic octopuses shown in mako mart seafood advertisements. either the splatfest was lying, this is an oversight, or something darker is happening. The splatfest also implies squids are extinct. Though in regards to the existence of aquatic squids, nogami had this to say a few months before the splatfest in question
So if Inklings eat fish, I asked, do they eat squids? “Inklings in this world are an evolved form of the squids in our world,” said Nogami. “Things like the food chain still exist.” Nogami said it’s possible that squids exist in Inkopolis the way they do IRL, adding that, if they do, “it’s definitely possible that an Inkling could potentially eat squids.”
i personally think it would make a LOT of sense for aquatic squids and octopuses to exist as they do IRL, as the same is true for a lot of sea creatures in Splatoon. but because of Squid vs. Octopus that probably isn't the case... The status of whether marine squids and octopuses are extinct or not is one of the few actually inconsistent things in splatoon. (and yes splatoon's lore is consistent if youre looking at the japanese version)
QUESTION, how do Inkfish have milk/milk flavoured things if there are no mammals to produce it? And if they synthesized the milk, how would they know that its nutritional? Or that it can be made into cheese/yogurt?
Even if theyre using oats or nuts to make milk substitues, i dont think those can be used to make other dairy products right? Idk im not a biologist
for this ask i thought about just linking the wikipedia pages for plant milk and vegan cheese or the video where i touch on this topic and leaving it at that, but i thought that would come off as too passive aggressive and i dont like that with how often i see this question floating around still i think its worth going into a bit more so i can just link this post in case anyone ever asks again.
“One thing we know about the world of Splatoon is that mammals are basically gone,” said Nogami, seated across from me in a small room behind Nintendo’s booth. “So they don’t eat beef or pork or the meat of mammals.” With Splatoon 2 playing on a screen, Nogami walked his Inkling over to a corner in Inkopolis square where a bright ad played for cereal. A crab chowed down on a bowl of milky carbs. “There’s no mammals, so whatever is being poured over the cereal might not be milk,” Nogami laughed. Hm. Okay. So what do Inklings eat? “Veggies, birds, fish,” said Nogami. “Some bread.” -- What do Squid Kids Eat? Splatoon’s Producer Explains
So the facts are: -Mammals are basically gone (excluding Judds/Grizz) -They drink milk that isn't real milk -There are crops cultivated in the Inkling world The obvious conclusion is that they use plant-based substitutes. there are a few questions that could spawn from this.... Q1: a bunch of stuff went extinct in the splatoon world. what kind of dairy substitutes could they use exactly? A: canonically, inklings have a variety of rice and soy-based products. a few types of nuts are confirmed to exist. they eat coconuts too. you can make milk out of all of these, as well as other dairy products like cheese and yogurt. They're not limited to plants either...
i swear everyone ive shown the left image goes like EWWW THEY EAT INK but like. squid ink is edible in real life. i dont get why this is weird?? nobody said ewww at the squiddymelon which i imagine would absorb ink to change colors like that. the concept that inklings figured out Ink-based dairy products is fucking awesome. anyways Q2: how did they figure this out? A: I think the answer can be found by looking into the history of plant milks in our world. Humans have been making and consuming plant based milks like soy and almond milk for centuries. the consumption of coconut milk goes back millennia. plant based cheeses are not as old, but still go back a hundred or so years. a lot of other dairy substitutes emerged in the past 50 years. Inklings figured out plastics, fish egg energy, and computers, surely at some point in their 2000+ year history, they figured out plant-based milks, cheeses, and yogurts. It's also possible that recipes from the human era survived. maybe they learned about dairy products that way. oh wait isn't there a sunken scroll about human era recipes?
yes There's also a non-zero chance that Judd could've taught the inklings about the human era and their food. The other question i can think of is... Q3: is there any specific mention of a plant based substitute being used instead of a mammalian product in splatoon? A: yes<3
In 2019 there was JP only splatfest, pineapple vs. no pineapple. It's about whether you put pineapple on subuta (japanese sweet and sour pork.) (i dont have strong opinions on pineapple, but the subuta at gyoza no osho. bro it will make me hurt myself and others. literally licking the fucking plate its so yummy. anyways.) Now pigs are extinct. How would pearl and marina have opinions on a pork dish?
「だな! アタシんちの古い書庫で見つけたレシピで ロブに作ってもらったやつだろ?」 「豚という生き物が 絶滅しちゃってるから 大豆とかで代用した 「酢豚風」でしたけどね♪」 Pearl: "That's the recipe you found in the old archives at my place, and Crusty Sean made it for you, right?" Marina: "Yeah, though since those creatures called pigs are extinct, he substituted it for soy and some other things to make a "subuta-style" dish~ "
this is the only thing i have seen that confirms plant-based substitutes being used for mammal meat in splatoon's setting. i learned of this just recently and i was SO happy this was confirmed somewhere<3 I think this gives a lot of weight to the idea that they'd use soy milk and other soy-based dairy products.
