‘Come here’
’Swim with us’
’Listen to our song’
The thin and subtle sun rays seemed to dance around him. Glistening over the pale skin of his body as he let himself relax at the bottom of the lake. Dark obsidian hair floating around in a soft movement, moving with every turn of his head as he fixed his eyes on the figure comming closer to him. It was easier to see them underwater, underwater he was able to see their body as more than just a translucent human-like shape.
Under the gleaming crystal surface of the water, they were full and complete. He was able to see their beautiful clothes. The flowy long hair and those deep, beautiful eyes. He could hear their voices perfectly, a sweet and soft whisper in his ear. A melodious lullaby, flowing inside his head, and all over his body. Calling him, pleading for him to come home.
'Your eyes are water'
The thin hand on his cheek was just as soft as it was cold. She floated right on top of him, and their eyes meet. Two pairs of blue, clear as water eyes. Meeting and pouring into the other. Liquid gazes colliding into one another. Her mouth moved, but the words she spoke weren’t in human language.
He still understood them, he always had.
'It's always nice to see you, Haruka.'
Soon there were many more or them, all around him, hands touching his skin. He had grown used to their light touch over the years. Sweet as the sound of their voices, all of them singing for him. He moved and ran his hand through silver and gold hair. So soft it felt like running water between his fingers.
Then there was a voice calling for him. One of the naiads turned over her shoulder and then back at him, caressing his cheek softly.
'He's looking for you, Makoto is here.'
Haru shifted, and using his feet to push himself up, he swam towards the surface and broke out of the water with a long intake of air. The sun and the sky were bright and the subtle sound of the falling water from the waterfall behind him, allowed Haru to hear his water nymph friends’ goodbyes for the day.
Makoto was waiting for him on the lakeside, holding his clothes and cloak with a soft smile on his face.
”I’m sorry for comming so soon, but you know what day it is.” The brunet offered a hand to help him out of the water.
”It’s fine.”
Haruka took the hand his friend was offering him and was soon pulled out of the lake. Water drops rolling down his naked body, reflecting the light and making him glow. Makoto handed him his clothes and Haruka’s eyebrows came a bit closer. “Haha, it’s not that bad to wear clothes, Haru.” The green eyed summoner chuckled a little at his companion’s reaction. Sometimes Haru wondered if he could actually read his mind, but then again, he wouldn’t really mind as long as it was Makoto.
And he was right, today was important. He could go visit his naiads tomorrow. Today they had some place to be at. He put his clothes on, which consisted in very little, and placed the dark mantle over his shoulders, allowing Makoto to fasten it. Today was a special day, because they had to go up the small hill and visit the old lady’s grave.
The woman who had protected them and teached them. She had took them under her wing when they needed it most. She saw two kids, where everyone in their old home saw two workhorses.
While they walked through the enchanted forest, towards the small hill, the number of flowers began to increase. They had started to sprout ever since they buried her there. As if they knew. Some of the other creatures in the forest began to walk along with them. Throughout their life growing up in this place, they both had come to know them all. From Aki the faun girl, to the small flower fairies like Chigusa. They all were his friends. More than that. They were all the family he had left. Specially Makoto.
As they stood there, in front of the shrine they had created with rocks and served as the old witch’s grave. Haruka looked up at the sky, the movement of the clouds. It was early, but they had to stay there until night came, to watch the light dance on top of the grave. Dance with the fairies.
He took a seat on the ground between the flowers and Makoto did the same. It was peaceful, life in the enchanted forest. Though he didn’t call it that anymore, not in years. He now called it simply 'home'. Where his family lived, where Makoto had meals with him, slept with him and spent the years by his side. It all began when they were kids, back when they used to live among the humans, in the kingdom he had started to think was just the remains of a bad dream.
But it wasn’t, it had been part of his life. When he was five and discovered that the things he saw underwater weren’t the things other people saw. That he was special. Makoto was already part of his life then. Honestly, Haruka couldn’t imagine nor remember a moment in his life when Makoto wasn’t present. And he didn’t want to.
When the soft afternoon breeze grazed his cheeks, he closed his eyes and could see himself young again. Holding Makoto’s hand as he confessed his secret to him in whispers. To which Makoto, with the usual childish joy of a five year old, replied with a secret of his own. He could hear what animals were thinking, and he could call them closer to him with just thinking about it. It felt relieving to know he wasn’t the only one. That he wasn’t alone. But when they turned 10, all magic users and magic creatures were declared objects, inferior to non-magic humans in every aspect. And forced to work for them. It was then that they had been forced to scape the kingdom. Their parents had betrayed them. (Or so Haru thought)
In reality, only Haruka’s parents had gone to the authorities and reported their son as a magic user, as well as Makoto. Makoto’s parents had convinced him to run away when the guards came. But it was just too painful for Haru to think that the fear of being arrested or executed as well was enough to make his parents forget their love for him. While Makoto’s parents didn’t. It was easier to think they were alone together. That all non-magic humans were the same. Because he was just as scared as his parents were.
So he took Makoto’s hand in his and ran, away from them all. And to never go back. That was when they arrived to the forest, and the witch took them in.
When Haru opened his eyes again, it was already sunset and the lights dance was beginning. Makoto stood up and offered him a hand. “Let’s start then.” Haruka took it, and didn’t let go even after he got up on his feet again. Just intertwining his fingers with the green eyed male’s.
The chant was the same as it had been for years, the same that they had engraved on the stone. It made the lights rise from the ground and towards the sky, as the fairies danced around them. It pleaded for her peaceful rest, and for the bubble protecting he forest to last another year. It was an old spell the witch had taught them long ago, it mantained peace within the forest’s borderlines and made it nearly impossible for a normal human to find this place. But most importantly, nothing inside the forest could die by the hands of another, and they all had long lives thanks to it.
When the ritual was over, it was sunrise. They walked slowly to the small cabin in which they lived, and went to sleep.
Days passed without anything out of place, until one afternoon. Haruka was swimming, moving swiftly with the nymphs underwater. Enjoying their songs of beauty and love, when one of the small ones came to tell him.
'Makoto is comming.'
That wasn’t strange, but the following words were.
‘And there’s a human with him.’
Those last words made Haruka’s blue eyes grow wide and the bubbles of air left his mouth. Crap, he covered his mouth and swam up, towards the waterfall. He surfaced behind it to take some air and when he heard the steps he turned over his shoulder to see Makoto’s silhouette through the falling water, and soon another one beside him. Haru stared at it intently.
Who was that?

Look what you did!
I didn't do anything. It's your fault.
There's nothing but disbelief on her face right now. There wasn't anything to read into, it was right on the title page of the book called 'Rin's Life'. "Onii-chan, I'm not that dumb. Haruka-senpai told me everything and then some things I didn't want to know."
