It used to feel cool to tell people "Yeah I'm self taught." when they asked about my artwork. More and more though I see how many gaps there are in my knowledge. Case in point: I suck at anatomy. I suck really bad. I've never taken an anatomy class and because I don't have a teacher, I can just skip right over hard stuff and just do fun stuff. That means I completely miss things that are hard. That's not so cool.... Here is an hour of sculpting condensed to a minute. As is expected, any sculpture I do even from reference spends far too long looking like a startled Asian woman, no matter who the subject is. Meanwhile, there are kids in art school who could get far passed this stage in ten minutes, because they have a knowledge of the underlying structure of humans that they can logically build volumes from. I plan on trying to force myself in the future to learn anatomy, and I hope some of you will too if you aren't already. Also if you are good at what you do, don't be afraid to share what you are bad at. It can help motivate others who are drowning in a feed full of seemingly effortless untouchable artists. .
