          “i know.”       she couldn’t help laughing a little, though she tilted her head and offered a gentle smile in exaggerated sympathy. “unfortunately, it’s a cross we all must bear.” cady gave him an encouraging little nudge to his arm. “but at least you don’t have to go through it alone, right? we’ve all gotta deal with the hardships of approaching adulthood.”

         “you forgot for five weeks?”       cady couldn’t help but laugh, taking a moment to recover from the snort that had initially slipped out in her initial knee-jerk reaction to such a revelation. “sorry, i          ... maybe you shouldn’t tell a lot of people about that, though.” she was kidding with him, of course, though the advice wasn’t offered solely in jest. “i mean, no judgment from me, but people who didn’t spend years living in a tent might not be so forgiving.”

          “it’s big. and loud. and ... smelly.”       she snorted a little chuckle before immediately clearing her throat, remembering she was supposed to be cool around all these new york city kids; that had been her parents’ advice for fitting in, at least. “but, i mean — different smelly from the animal smelly i’m used to, obviously. city smelly, i guess. cause, you know, it’s ... it’s different, and all. nothing i can identify, i mean. sorry — what was the question?”
