Ā Ā Ā SOMETIMES SHE WONDERS if sheās a magnet for trouble or simply has an internal compass that leads her directly to it. maybe itās both. nonetheless, even something as simple as going out to run errands turns into far more. rayne hears the screech of sirens before she rounds the corner, eyes going wide when they catch the scene before her. Ā Ā Ā the building is engulfed in flames. itās the kind of blaze thatās going to claim everythingĀ and the only hope the fire department has is containing it. thereās no putting it out until thereās nothing left to burnānot until the whole thing comes crashing down.
Ā Ā Ā sheās quick in her assessment of the situation. there arenāt enough shadows for her to use in the building and if sheās learned anything itās that fire makes her job all the more difficult. rayne has figured out that her abilities arenāt as potent against fire. it burns through anything solid she tries to make, but at least she can buy time. right now, though, thereās no time to play this as shadowbringer. Ā Ā Ā feet carry her forward in a sprint and she subtly slips through the fingers of anyone trying to grab her ( a neat little trick sheās learned ). leather jacket is zipped all the way up to give her some minor protection from the flames once she barrels her way through the doors. Ā Ā Ā finding the stairwell is easy, and parts of the stairs are still intact but thereās no telling for how long. it isnāt going to stop her. sheāll find a way out with or without them. whatās harder is tracking the little bits of shadow still in the building. sheās trying to use them to listen, to know who might still be inside. rayne can feel them, the lifeĀ in at least one shadow still here. she holds on to it, using it as a homing beacon thatās going to lead her to whomever it belongs to.
Ā Ā Ā the more floors she climbs, the thicker the smoke becomes and the more she can feel the heat. sheās getting closer to the thick of it and itās leaving her with fewer and fewer options. giving up isnāt much her shtick though, and she holds on to that little shadow, the life she can feel through it. none of this is over until itās over, and it isnāt finished until that person is safe or rayne is deadāand sheāll die trying if thatās what it takes.
