Playpen time for my six foster boys!
A lot of rats that aren’t the best socialized can be cage defensive, which means they don’t like people reaching into their cage. Sometimes, playpen time can work wonders for socializing these rats. I’ve had a lot of rats who are more open to human interaction in their playpen rather than their enclosure. As they get used to you, they often start getting more comfortable with you messing around in their cage and may start coming up to you.
Handfeeding wet treats like baby food (which prevents the rat from grabbing the treat and running away) can also go a long way towards socializing. If you’re worried about nipping, you can feed them at the end of a spoon so they can’t bite you on accident.
These two tricks usually do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to socializing my foster rats. Sometimes progress is quite slow and sometimes it’s quicker. Introducing baby ratties to confident and friendly adult rats can speed up the process since rats are social learners, and babies will look to the older rats to see how to react to different situations.
