The 15th century French king, Charles VII of Valois (ruled 1422-1461) was known to have enjoyed this delicacy. Also, the Bourbon dynasty enjoyed pain dâĂ©pices, starting with Henri IVâs recognition of a pain dâĂ©pices guild in the 16th century, and even Louis XIV during the 17th century fell for this delicious cake.
