Our featured #FriendOfAmericano this month is Spencer Bailey, Editor-in-Chief at Surface magazine. Surface is one of our favorite magazines (we feature it in every room) and seeing Spencer walk through our front door is one of our favorite things. As lovers of all things design, Surface never fails to highlight the best in fashion, hospitality, interiors, architecture and the thought leaders and creators making it all happen. Usually, Spencer is the one asking questions. We decided to ask him a few of our own.

What is your favorite thing about the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC?

The High Line on a winter's night, when it's practically empty of people.

What are you currently reading?

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. 

What makes your Hotel Americano experience unique?

I have to preface my answer with that fact that I'm a stickler when it comes to the word "unique"—it's banned from the pages of Surface. What I think you mean, though, is what makes Hotel Americano special to me. That would have to be the fact that nearly every time I'm there for lunch I run into somebody I know—and that I feel transported to Mexico City as soon as I walk in.

Who inspires your style?

Nobody in particular. I like things simple and direct and don't overthink what I wear. One day, I'll put on Adidas Stan Smiths, a button down, and 3x1 jeans; the next, Margiela boots and a Lanvin suit. Whatever looks good, feels comfortable, and makes sense for the day.
