The speed trap is always placed in the fastest point of the circuit. When you look at a circuit map, and see the speed trap mentioned, it’s here the cars usually are the fastest.

The speed trap is usually placed at the end of a long straight, here DRS is used, just before the braking point.

I think the team use a lot the speed trap as it can tell you how the car are fuel, a car that is in full throttle and is slower than the other when they normally aren’t, is because they are running in high fuel, or if a car is normally slow are the speed trap is good, they are running in low fuel.

From here, what we can learn is that Mick was in low fuel, and Sergio was probably in medium fuel and Max in high. You have Mazepin there as well, so it was probably a team decision and strategy to run in low fuel to get ready for Quali.

The engineer can also now it drivers are running in different engine modes, but that to complicate for me 😂

My dad uses to say (so not confirm as my source is my dad) that the speed trap tells you how good a driver is, he always says that speed doesn’t lie, and if a drivers isn’t confident, he will brake too early, having a lower speed trap recording.

In FP1, the speed trap isn’t very informative and interesting to know how confident a driver is with his car, as we don’t know how the fuel is and you exactly his running in high fuel and low fuel. But if you look at this from last Quali in Austria :

As you can see, the Mclaren were absolutely flying on the straights, and if you remember, Lewis had a lot of trouble to overtake Lando during the race, it was mostly because of the difference in the straights that you can see on the speed trap that is localized at the end of the last DRS zone in the Red Bull ring.

In another hand, you can see that Ferrari are last in the chart, it is in accordance with their complaints as well, they said it multiple times, they aren’t quick enough in the straights.

You can also see that Daniel loses a lot of time comparing to Lando in Quali but it isn’t in the straights, is in the corners, as they speed trap are almost the same

Quali once are the best to look at as all car are in low fuel, all normally in the same tyres.

Coming back to Mick, it was quite a surprise to see him fist in the speed trap, and by a lot. My best guess is that he was running in very low fuel. However, I saw his onboard from the FP1 and he complained quite a bit about the balance of the car and the fact the car wasn’t good for the corners, so they could have mess up with the downforce as well. As the circuit is a medium to high downforce, so if he ran in a low medium downforce, he will be quickest in the straights but slower in the corners at make it tricky but it is only my guess
