Normalising Not Knowing - The Balance Bike of Mathematics
A few months ago, my wife and I introduced our 2 year old son to his first bike. It’s different to my first bike in a lot of ways: it’s brand new #middlechildlyf, weighs nearly nothing, and has no pedals or brakes. It also has no bell, which is a genius omission. My first bike had pedals, brakes, and was about double the size of my son’s bike. My first bike also had two tiny “training wheels”…

We had a brief that was entitled The Four Elements- we had to represents this through art. We had to choose the elements: all of them, pair them, only one of them. I chose to work with the Air element! I am heavily inspired by Studio Ghibli animation, especially their beautiful art style and story lines. Afterwards, I took that inspiration and I drew a design for the Air World.
I made a world where the humans are small sized (inspired by Arrietty, animation movie) and they live in the hot air balloons. The other elements don’t exist within this universe. The purple balloons represent the little houses they live in, the middle one is the ‘Town Hall’, or Balloon Hall. It is where they all meet and socialise! The dragons are not always visible, as they are the Air spirits and they protect the world from evil and pollution. They maintain the harmony and balance between air and humanity. The main blue dragon is inspired by Haku from Spirited Away. He is the big protector and has the most power over the Air World. Spirits seem to be a common element in Japanese animation as people tend to ask for their guidance and protection at times. The smaller dragons are inspired by Pokemon, they represent the rest of the air spirits that do the rest of the work by protecting whatever needed.
Due to very tight timeline it is not as polished or even the desired scale. However, this must be one of my favourite projects. I would love to transfer this idea onto a real space; it would not only suit the young generation but also Studio Ghibli fans, which include a lot of adults. I chose fantasy as my subject because I felt the need for positivity as the world seems to be crippling in climate change and air pollution. I made all the objects by hand, excluding the frame. I kept it very light and worked with paper and textile, so it is not heavy to maintain or carry. The spirits were going to be made out of modelling clay but the clay was much heavier than I thought. Anyways, I would still love to go back to this idea of using the material as it is malleable and very versatile. Paper has been one of my struggles, but I seem to be getting better with it. This could easily be turned into a major project as well, which will hopefully influence future ones!
We had the opportunity to work with real clients in the new year- The Gandini jugglers that will do a show in Pontio, our local Arts Centre. It is also a space that is connected with Bangor University for students to relax and work in. Me and my group were assigned the Columns/Pillars in the cafe in Pontio. They had asked us to research the Gandini jugglers and base the work on them, but also make the work suitable within a commercial, spacious place. The Gandini jugglers place emphasis not only on the juggling itself but also on the elegance and geometry behind their dance moves. Their dance is inspired by the traditional Indian dance: Bharatanatyam ( Tamil Nadu). Therefore, we took elements from all of these places and came up with three different designs. I had worked mainly on the middle column (as seen in the first photo). I used their dance moves to create a rhombus shape, added a few juggling balls and an impactful flower as a centrepiece. We kept it clean and minimal for it to suit a white space and make it pleasing to the eye. We still wanted to use a consistent colour palette of red, blue, orange and gold to suit the other groups as well and work together as one project. It was slightly challenging as we had never worked in groups before in Foundation; however, I appreciate the opportunity as it has shown everyone’s skills combined into one project. This live brief prepares us for the real world that we shall interact with in our Undergraduate years as well as our future careers.

We went on a three days trip to Cornwall as a group, kindly offered to us by Falmouth University as an experience. We were all given a sketchbook that had to be completed in the course of those three days. We went to the Eden Project first and our accommodation was in the Youth hostels. We ran around with packed lunches in between the two biomes at Eden: the Mediterranean and the Rainforest (as well as the outdoor garden). I have gotten another chance to fill the sketchbooks with great life drawings, exploring quick ways of using mediums. I wanted to create the essence that Eden had-tropical, free, fresh. I must admit this is one my favourite sketchbooks- it is an album with drawings and collages.
As I was placed into the Applied Design group, our tutor assigned us the brief entitled ‘Layers’. I had previously done A-Level Psychology and it was my favourite subject in Sixth Form. Moreover, I took inspiration from the very famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, well known for his controversial theories. My preferred theory is the tripartite personality which separates our personality into three categories: the id, the supergo, the ego. The red room represents the id, the primitive, pleasure centre of the mind. The checkered floor is written with the words: Avoidance, Get more ill- showing a few thoughts that illustrate the id. The red armchair is singular because of avoidance and isolation. The fur, the red dominance represents sexual urges, mostly socially unacceptable. The frames on the walls also illustrate all of these elements together: holding onto the fake smiles of people, sexuality, judgement, burning bridges. The white room represents the supergo, the angel on my shoulder bringing me back to my moral principle. The superego is in conflict with the id in our mind. The cloud roof and white columns show the angelic behaviour-altruism, kindness. The mirror reminds me to look at myself before I speak or judge someone- thinking twice. The circular sofa symbolises the way my superego makes me put my guard down and let people in, including others in my life. There is no boundary between us as we sit together. Finally, the pink room is the balance between the red and the white room- the ego. The ego works on the reality principle, maintaining an equilibrium that is much needed in order to have a healthy mind. The curtain is imprinted with the Mars and Venus signs submerge and represents the balance between the attraction for both men and women. There is a table in the middle with four chairs; it symbolises how I can accept people in my life but maintain a distance. The metal wire eye on the wall is my ego telling me to remain cautious, but not be completely naive about people. I could always take a chair out and cut ties with someone who is toxic. The hanging plants show my growth as a person- a reminder that everything that happens helps my growth in some way.
