because serpentine was created to essentially be a peridot that could summon gem weapons and protect herself her class of gems was supposed to be durable, but they ended up being pathetically easy to poof and break. when the diamond authority figured this out, they put the best technicians out of the lot to do peridot missions and the rest as front line soldiers their enemies would tire themselves out on. serpentine from her creation valued her survival over other gems so when she heard (1/2)
(2/2) about the plan to put the last of the serpentines on the front lines she bailed. shes an okay technician but doesnt have enough of the logic and cerebral-ness of most technician gems and she knows that. plus she'd almost broken mission parameters before because she didnt think completing the mission exactly as told would be conducive for her survival

oh SHIT that sounds cool..... lol, i still don’t have that sort of backstory for boulder yet. she’s just this drifter/smuggler who appeared out of nowhere to hire a flawed turquoise for a pilot, because her ship’s built out of scraps and tape, and no one but a gem with the right sort of instability could make it do the things boulder had it built for.
back when turq’s maker and i were musing about what would happen if boulder was reset to factory settings - aka acquired a convenient case of amnesia - and thought that maybe boulder spent her early life fighting in an illegal ring? idk though.
the fact that her weapon is needles, and her frame is smaller and more fragile than the typical quartz brawler type says that her original purpose might have been something more intellectual, maybe some sort of spy. i know that her factory settings make her quiet, clever, distrustful, and a magnificent liar. yeah, some sort of undercover role that would make use of paranoia and a compulsion to gather information...
and now she’s a gleefully blunt smuggler who smashes up shit carelessly wherever she goes. i love my boulder. this got longer than i thought it would.

i want to estimate the poofing threshold to be "if this blunt force injury will kill humans, serpentine will probably poof" but thats no fun so she would probably scurry away after getting hit and cause massive property damage as a distraction (i mean having plasma cannons for hands is perfect for property damage)
boulder would not hit hard enough to poof! that would end the fight WAY too early. this is a form of communication and entertainment. and also boulder is probably impressed at serpentine’s capacity for property damage, she can’t really do that much raw destruction with her itty bitty needles.

boulder opal would allow this, because boulder opal is Tol and secure about her height. plus, it makes it that much easier to smash a bar stool into serpentine and knock her onto the floor.
