@spczom asked: “I did something terrible.”
” DO YOU WANT to talk about it? “ Gentle tones from softened features, cup of precious coffee held out to the soldier left to watch her. Or so she supposed. Echoes of some of his comrades in arms searching her cellar almost brought a chuckle to her lips. Who knew she would be so thirsty for human contact and voices that the U.S. Army requisitioning the food stores she built up over the last few months would bring her joy? Her gaze still darted to the door with the slightest quirk of her lips before her attention centered on him once more.
To prevent him from feeling put on the spot, she turned to her table, pouring more steaming coffee into cups, mismatched china and granny speckled tin. The percolator should be enough, even if a few wanted seconds, but the smokeless fire in her hearth still crackled softly, warming the small cabin. Depending on how much they took, she might ask to go with them and some hospitality should help ease the answer. Simply too late in the fall to hope to eek out another harvest from her garden, and extremely loath to leave alone to see what might have been left in stores, their decision could be quite devastating to her chances.
“ I might’ve been shored up here a couple of months, but I can’t imagine what'ch’ya boys have been through has been anything near easy. “
