Spear throw tips: I have struggled a long time with a consistent spear throw. Here are my best tips. (No pun intended). 1. Find the balance point and hold the spear slightly behind it. 2. Use a thumbless grip and grip it hard. I think you lose a lot of power when you hold it like a dart. 3. Stand facing your target. 4. Make sure your elbow is under your wrist and not flying out to the side. This is another place you lose power. Have someone film you because you will think you are doing it right but your elbow will be at a crazy angle. 5. Keep your throwing elbow pointed at the target. Feel the lats contract and the pec stretch on the throwing hand. 6. Free hand is outstretched and pointing to the target. 7. Take your first step with the opposite foot. So if I am left-handed, I am quickly stepping out with my right foot creating tension. 8. Squeeze the spear and bring your arm forward, not across the body. 9. Take a deep breath before the throw to stabilize the core so you don’t get an energy leak. When you release, use a short hard exhale with maybe 25% of the air in your lungs. When you do this, the spear will fly straighter and will have power behind it. If you do the set-up right, you have basically idiot-proofed your throw. I hope this helps.
